Perched atop a hill in a resort on Negros Occidental Island is a six-story, 35-meter-tall building shaped like a giant chicken, known as Manok ni Cano. This structure is a hotel with 15 air-conditioned rooms, but they lack windows. According to Ricardo Cano Gwapo Tan, the hotel owner, windows would detract from the aesthetic appeal of the chicken's plumage, leaving the building incomplete.
On September 8th, the hotel was recognized by the Guinness World Records as " the world's largest building shaped like a chicken." Explaining the reason for building the hotel in this shape, Tan said he "wanted to leave a great legacy in this world."
Tan, a former politician now in his 70s, always considers the resort his "playground" where he can create impressive works. Despite his age, Tan still considers himself to have the spirit of a child.
Tan built the building to honor the poultry industry – an industry that provides jobs for tens of thousands of Filipinos. He also wanted to emphasize the importance of chickens to the people on the island.
Besides staying in this unique building, visitors to the island can also experience cockfighting, or sabong in the local dialect. This is a traditional pastime dating back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Today, cockfighting is also popular in rural areas of Thailand and Indonesia, but it is banned in India.
"The cockfighting industry is a multi-billion peso empire (1 billion pesos is equivalent to 17 million USD) on the island," Tan said. Currently, cockfighting arenas across the country rake in millions of pesos from gamblers' bets.

Currently, there are over 2,000 poultry farms across the island, making it a leading industry in the province, alongside sugar production and pig farming.
The rooster-shaped hotel was completed in time to welcome guests for Christmas. Tan said that when he was a child, the rooster's crow in December served as a reminder for families to attend Misa de Gallo, or the Mass of the Rooster, a morning prayer service held nine days before Christmas.
Currently, the rooster-shaped resort and hotel is fully booked until the end of January 2025. A room for four people at the rooster hotel costs nearly $80. A larger room, accommodating seven people at once, costs $120.
This resort is also owned by the Tan family. His wife, Anita, bought this quiet mountain-top plot of land decades ago. When the property was expanded in 2010, the resort now features two wave pools, a restaurant, a café, and hundreds of cartoon figurines to entertain young guests.
To reach the Rooster Hotel, visitors land at an airport in Manila or Cebu and then take a flight to Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Negros Occidental. From the airport, visitors take a taxi for another 16 km to reach the resort.
