Nestled in the middle of St. Giles Street in Oxford, the Netty Hotel is a small, underground hotel. Few people know that this building was originally a public toilet for men.

This structure was built in 1895 during the reign of Queen Victoria. After more than 100 years of operation, it was closed in 2008 for safety reasons.

For the next 11 years, the area lay abandoned until the owner decided to revive it with a bold idea: turning the old public toilet into a unique luxury hotel in the heart of Oxford city.

At the moment, the Netty Hotel is considered one of the most unusual places to stay in the city. According to Ana Pinheiro, the hotel manager, this accommodation is not for everyone, but it still has its own charm.

"We wanted to create a space that would offer a personalized experience for guests. Each guest could feel the unexpected details that made the place unique. We put a lot of effort into creating the most unique accommodation in Oxford," Ms. Pinheiro shared with the New York Times Style magazine reporter.

The name Netty comes from a local Geordie term meaning “a small toilet at the back of a house”. Due to space constraints, the hotel has just two rooms, both underground, with prices starting from £170 a night.

Lottie Gross (British) once had the opportunity to experience an overnight stay here. She said that when entering Netty, visitors will not see reception staff, restaurant or room service. However, guests are still supported via a 24/7 hotline and enjoy a free cocktail upon check-in.

Although it is called a hotel, this accommodation has only two rooms, named "Number One" and "Number Two". Each room is located at the bottom of a separate staircase in the middle of one of the busiest streets in Oxford.

The main complaint guests have about the hotel is that there is no one to answer the phones or at the front desk. The door code is often broken. It sounds like a hassle, but once inside, all preconceptions are gone.

The hotel has no trace of Victorian urinals or stainless steel, nor do the old walls from the 1970s refurbishment.

Instead, it is a cozy, personal and Oxford-style space. This is considered the result of Mr. Charlie Harries-Jones (owner) and interior designer Rachael Gowdridge. They won the renovation contract from the city council.

Room Number One is a summery hug, with its pastel pink walls and carved wood trim around the TV and doors. The room has a feminine brass seashell lamp and pastel pink toilet.

Meanwhile, room "Number Two" has navy blue and burgundy tones. The room can warm the hearts of visitors on a gloomy winter afternoon.

The interior design also reflects the Oxford spirit. There are plaster replicas of artifacts from the Ashmolean Museum (just a few minutes' walk from the hotel), and double-striped curtains around the shower area that evoke the stage of the nearby Playhouse Theatre.

Each room has a mini-fridge, water, canned cocktails and instant coffee, but still makes guests feel full. Just step outside and you are in the heart of Oxford. Just a few minutes' walk away are popular restaurants and bars.

According to Ms. Gross, the hotel still has some security issues that need to be addressed. Because the stairs to the rooms are outside, anyone can enter and there are no surveillance cameras. Therefore, female travelers traveling alone may feel a little worried.

Gross said she always locks the door securely when entering a room to feel more secure.

Although not as grand or comfortable as large-scale accommodation establishments, a hotel with only 2 rooms like Netty still makes many tourists curious and excited. This is a vivid proof of the ability to regenerate and create in old buildings in the heart of ancient England.
