Thai tourist bursts into tears after being hugged by seafood restaurant owner in Da Nang .

In early March, a Thai tourist named Foam and his group of friends took a 5-day, 4-night trip to Da Nang and Hoi An. Upon arriving in Da Nang, the group explored local cuisine and visited famous attractions in the city. In Hoi An, they strolled through the ancient town and took a basket boat tour of the Bay Mau coconut forest.

An unexpected hug

One evening in Da Nang, while walking along Vo Nguyen Giap Street looking for a place to eat, Foam's group stopped at a seafood restaurant. Because they were busy arranging motorbike rentals, they couldn't sit down for a meal and had to buy food to take away.

Before leaving, Foam used a translation app on his phone to send a thank you message: "Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I'm so sorry I couldn't stay and eat at your restaurant today. You're truly so kind."

After reading the message, the owner unexpectedly approached and hugged Foam, advising the group to be careful while riding their motorbikes. He also warned tourists about potential high fares when taking taxis in the city, and then suggested some places to visit in Da Nang.

"The owner's kindness brought me to tears. I felt like I wasn't a tourist anymore, but like a member of the family. That moment truly moved me deeply," Foam told Tri Thức - Znews.

Arisa, a member of the group, shared this moment on social media, attracting over 500,000 views. Meanwhile, a "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" video of Foam learning to speak Vietnamese also received 1.3 million interactions.

Before ending his trip, Foam went to a tattoo shop on Le Hong Phong Street, Hai Chau Ward, where he had made an appointment in advance. Thuan Nguyen, the tattoo artist, said that the customer, who arrived on March 9th, had booked the appointment 3-4 days before his flight to Vietnam.

According to the plan, Foam was only supposed to get three small tattoos: a red heart, a butterfly, and a simple light detail. However, during the process, the client expressed a desire to have an additional design related to Vietnam.

"I love Vietnam"

Foam said he loves Vietnam very much, but the ideas he found on Google didn't fully express his feelings. Seeing this, Thuan suggested he get a tattoo that said "I love Vietnam".

Initially, Foam wanted the word "Vietnam" tattooed in red, and "I love" in black. However, Thuan suggested that the entire inscription be in red for a more harmonious look. The tourist agreed and left the design to the tattoo artist.

After the tattoo was completed, Foam expressed his satisfaction and emotion. Appreciating the customer's feelings, Thuan decided to give the tattoo away for free. "The phrase 'I love Vietnam' perfectly captures my feelings throughout my time here," Foam said.

Thuan's shop primarily caters to foreign customers. Tattoos related to Vietnam are quite popular, such as conical hats, flags, the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, lotus flowers, Vietnamese girls, or images of Hoi An. For customers who want tattoos depicting Vietnamese culture, he is willing to give them away as a souvenir or offer a discount.

Foam said that each tattoo, for him, needs careful consideration and must carry a special meaning. "I've always admired Vietnamese culture, especially its art and creativity. On this trip, I wanted to do something to mark the deep connection I feel with this place," he said.

Foam's story also reflects the growing trend of Thai tourists choosing Da Nang as their destination. In the first two months of the year, the city welcomed 62,683 Thai visitors, demonstrating steady growth.

Previously, in 2025, Da Nang recorded approximately 313,000 visitors from this market, accounting for 4.1% of the total international visitors. Thanks to the advantages of connectivity via the East-West Economic Corridor and the direct Bangkok-Da Nang flight, the number of Thai tourists to the city is steadily increasing, becoming one of the potential international markets.

At the end of their 5-day, 4-night trip, Foam said the whole group was surprised by the great attention their videos received from the Vietnamese online community. He was also excited to become "famous" here, and expressed his gratitude to those who showed their love and support.

"I will definitely return to Vietnam next year," he said.
