On January 6, Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Company No. 1 (HURC1, the operator) informed about the first 2 weeks of commercial operation of metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien).

According to the operator, the metro line No. 1 of Ho Chi Minh City (metro No. 1: Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) has just passed the 2-week mark since its official commercial operation on December 22, 2024. With enthusiastic support from residents and tourists , and with Ho Chi Minh City's policy of reducing ticket prices by 100% in the first month, the number of passengers traveling in the first two weeks increased by 300% compared to the plan.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers have used the metro every day, proving that this new public transport system meets the needs and expectations of the community. The peak on New Year's Day, January 1, 2025, saw a spike in passenger numbers of 275,144.

Metro Line 1's operations team has been working hard to serve passengers along the entire line and at 14 stations with 200 trains per day. On December 31, 2024, there will be 220 trains running from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (an increase of 1 hour compared to the daily operating schedule) and on January 1, 2025, there will be 246 trains running, extending the operating time to 2:00 a.m.

HURC1 representative said that, besides the positive signals, the operation team has discovered many violations, affecting the overall experience of all passengers.

Common violations include: violations of regulations on doors and safety warning lines. Some passengers block platform screen doors (PSD) and train doors to wait for relatives to get on and off, causing danger.

“The train doors only take 30 seconds to open and close, but some passengers still tried to rush out/get on the train while the doors were closing. Many passengers crossed the safety warning line despite being reminded, forcing station staff to intervene and remind them repeatedly,” said a HURC1 representative.

In addition, many passengers do not line up at the entrance, escalators and trains, causing disorder and affecting other passengers. There are cases of jostling and pushing to quickly get on/off the train, causing safety risks. Many passengers do not cooperate in making boarding passes or scanning QR codes when entering/exiting the control gate with the reason that the free experience does not need to be done.

Along with that are other behaviors such as: using priority elevators for the wrong purposes; bringing food, drinks and pets into the station; using photography equipment, taking unsafe photos and not being aware of maintaining public hygiene.

“Passengers use tripods (cameras/video cameras/phones) in the station and on the train, causing obstruction to other passengers. In many cases, passengers lean out of the EWD door (door for use by station staff only in emergency situations) to take pictures, do not comply with the staff's reminders and continue to move to other locations to take pictures. There are cases of taking off clothes, which is uncivilized when taking pictures. The number of station staff is overloaded with focusing on serving passengers, not enough to quickly prevent this situation when it arises" - the representative of the operating unit informed.

According to HURC1, with many cases of non-compliance with metro culture, station staff have increased reminders and resolved difficult situations that arise outside of their main duties, increasing their workload. Operators are also at risk of facing conflicts and arguments when preventing passengers from engaging in improper behavior, creating great pressure at work.

“Passengers' failure to comply with boarding and disembarking rules and attempts to cross the safety line when the train doors are about to close can sometimes cause unsafe conditions, damage operating equipment and affect operating procedures,” warned a representative of the operating unit.

More than 11,000 passengers assisted

According to the operating unit, more than 11,000 passenger cases were supported in 2 weeks of operation, including: disabled passengers (blind, wheelchair users), elderly passengers (> 60 years old), lost children, lost luggage - property, special cases (vomiting, vomiting, fainting)...
