Bringing AI into teaching in schools

In the era of the 4.0 industrial revolution, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a choice but a necessity. In education, AI is not only a supporting tool, but also opens up creative and effective teaching methods. Many schools have recently become familiar with AI and it is expected that in the next school year, the education and training sector in many localities will teach AI in a more systematic way with highly applicable content.

Pilot before mass replication

In the 2025-2026 school year, Ho Chi Minh City plans to introduce AI into school teaching. Currently, the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training are assigning specialized units to develop and implement specific plans and closely coordinate with Saigon University and related units in training and fostering teachers to improve their capacity to apply technology in teaching. Strive to effectively integrate AI into teaching activities at educational institutions from the 2025-2026 school year. Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training ordered Saigon University to develop a scientific topic: Developing AI teaching content for high school students in Ho Chi Minh City, starting from grade 3. This is the basis for high schools to deploy AI into teaching for all grades on a large scale. Accordingly, the program content at each different level is designed in a spiral form, the higher the level, the more content is repeated and knowledge is supplemented.

To prepare for the successful implementation, in the professional activities of the Information Technology subject, the Department of Secondary Education has directed training sessions, activities, and integrated the introduction of AI content in the thematic activities. In addition, professional groups also select content related to AI to supplement and expand knowledge. In the near future, the Department will organize extensive training sessions for teachers. Regarding the team, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that it is expected that the teachers teaching AI will be Information Technology teachers and Math teachers with good IT skills to support teaching.

Before mass deployment, Ho Chi Minh City piloted AI teaching in some schools such as Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted. AI has been taught to students in specialized classes of grades 10, 11, and 12 since the 2019-2020 school year. Some other schools in Ho Chi Minh City also organize AI teaching in the form of clubs such as Bui Thi Xuan High School. Many people were surprised when testing two artificial intelligence products designed by students of Bui Thi Xuan High School in the school's artificial intelligence club under the guidance of teachers. That is the software "Recognizing Bui Thi Xuan School's gym uniform" that helps students of the school to "check" their information just through their uniforms....

In Hanoi, a pilot model of smart education using AI is also being implemented at 5 schools at all levels. This pilot is within the framework of the scientific research project "Building and piloting a smart education model for preschool and general education in Hanoi" with the aim of applying digital transformation to all levels of education in Hanoi, from preschool to general education. Each school and each level of education will implement it in their own way in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training plans to organize acceptance tests in the near future and possibly replicate the model at schools in the city.

In each school, many teachers have also proactively approached, learned about and initially applied AI in teaching. Giang Vo Secondary School (Hanoi) informed that from the 2025-2026 school year, it will deploy the "Google Digital Classroom" model in 3 key classes in grade 6. To date, 100% of teachers teaching "Google Digital Classroom" have Google Certified Educator Level 1 Certificate; proficiently use the Google Workspace for Education ecosystem; effectively apply AI in management, teaching, testing and evaluation of educational activities, in line with the innovation orientation of the 2018 general education program. Each student participating in the class is allowed to use a separate laptop or tablet, encouraged to use Google Chromebook, ensuring strict management of content through the operation and supervision of teachers. Ms. To Thi Hai Yen - Principal of Giang Vo Secondary School said that from the 2026-2027 school year, based on the actual situation, in the following school years, the school plans to replicate this model on a school-wide scale.

In Hai Phong, Ms. Le Thi Minh Tam - Principal of Tran Phu Secondary School (Le Chan Ward) said that, realizing the urgency of AI in education, especially the benefits that AI brings to make teaching more effective and creative in Natural Science, the school's Board of Directors has directed the Natural Science team to develop a plan, discuss the direction of implementing specific tasks, study lessons and refer to documents, and ask for opinions from AI experts to jointly promote and improve teaching effectiveness.

In the future, AI will not replace you, but people who know how to use AI will replace you. That is the current warning of experts about the impact of AI on modern life. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce AI into the general education program for students from an early age. However, due to the different socio-economic characteristics of each region and the different levels of students, the introduction of AI into teaching for students needs to be piloted, experience gained and widely replicated after being carefully researched.

Clear and careful implementation roadmap

With the support of AI, teachers will have more powerful tools to convey knowledge, students will have a better learning environment, and the entire education system will make further progress. This is also a solution for teaching natural sciences in schools when facing many challenges due to the large number of students, while the teaching staff cannot meet the quantity and quality of expertise. Similar to other subjects, the application of AI to support teachers in creating intuitive and engaging lectures, creating an interactive learning environment for students as well as AI to help monitor the learning progress of each student, thereby adjusting the teaching content to suit each student's individual needs are clear benefits that AI brings that need to be utilized appropriately.

However, AI technology is constantly changing, so how to train teachers and teach students needs to be carefully considered, a systematic roadmap built, and regular updates and guidance for teachers to avoid falling behind. In particular, the curriculum and teaching plans must also be open to suit the rapidly changing requirements of the times.

The advantages that AI brings cannot be denied, but Deputy Director of the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training Pham Quoc Hieu also noted that teachers should use AI as a tool to support teaching and learning, not to replace the interaction between teachers and students in the classroom, the role of teachers in imparting and guiding students to acquire knowledge is still the focus.

Students need to be prepared with knowledge about AI right now. In particular, how to use AI effectively, safely, and responsibly are the requirements. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Anh Cuong (Head of the Department of Computer Science, Ton Duc Thang University), it is necessary to issue policies and regulations on the use of AI in education, train teachers on how to use AI effectively, help students develop critical thinking skills and verify information, monitor and limit the use of AI in learning assessment, protect student privacy and data, and build a suitable educational AI ecosystem.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Cuong also proposed building a digital technology ecosystem - AI dedicated to education. Including building a large language model dedicated to education, building digital textbooks integrated with AI tools, building a digital system to assess students' abilities.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong assessed that we are in a favorable context to bring AI into general education, with challenges but more opportunities. “Be decisive, it is true that we must be decisive and move faster in applying AI. We need to take advantage of what the world has done and what is happening in practice to take action. Act immediately and be extremely decisive, proactive, creative, and appropriate to the practical conditions of each place” - Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong directed and stated that the characteristics of education are widespread, so there needs to be steps and pilots.

The 2025-2026 school year will be implemented with the spirit of continuing to innovate extensively, completing the glorious mission. The keywords for implementation are "implementation" and "implementation". In particular, according to Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, the strong implementation of AI applications, making an AI transformation - belongs to the group of implementation of the 2018 General Education Program in the new stage, the stage of quality. At the same time, strengthening STEM education with the correct understanding that students must apply knowledge from subjects to solve problems they face in practice.
