To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Hanoi and Hue (1960-2025), on December 18th, at the Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam National Special Monument in Hanoi, the Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam Cultural and Scientific Activities Center, in collaboration with the Hue City History Museum, inaugurated a thematic exhibition entitled "From Thang Long to Phu Xuan - The Journey of Vietnamese Ceramics".

Hanoi and Hue, both former capitals during the monarchical era, boast a rich cultural tradition. Regarding pottery, each region has its own long-standing pottery style, each with distinct characteristics. However, a common thread between these two regions is their appreciation for cultural values in general, and the value of pottery heritage in particular. The exhibition "From Thang Long to Phu Xuan - The Journey of Vietnamese Pottery" is a journey of discovery , introducing to the public the unique historical and cultural values of Thang Long (Hanoi) and Phu Xuan (Hue) in the historical process and the formation of pottery in these two former capitals.

The products selected for display and introduction on this occasion aim to honor the harmonious blend of court and folk culture. The exhibition focuses on introducing Bat Trang ceramics – a thousand-year-old heritage of Thang Long- Hanoi – and Phuoc Tich ceramics – the essence of the land of the people of Phu Xuan-Hue, connected to the historical flow of the Thuan Hoa-Phu Xuan region with its system of ancient village architectural heritage and traditional handcrafted pottery making processes.

The first section of the exhibition provides a brief history of the formation and development of Bat Trang pottery village through various dynasties, highlighting the distinctive formulas, shaping techniques, and heat application methods used in firing... that have created the brand of Bat Trang pottery. Here, visitors can admire many ancient pottery products showcasing the skill of the people of Bat Trang through generations.

The exhibition on Phuoc Tich pottery follows the historical flow of the Thuan Hoa-Phu Xuan region, introducing the architectural heritage of the ancient Phuoc Tich village, the traditional pottery-making process, and the historical, cultural, and economic values that this pottery style once brought to the ancient capital.

Among these products are those accompanied by fascinating cultural stories from the "imperial capital" of Hue. A prime example is the story of the "royal jade pot," or earthenware pot used to cook rice for the Nguyen Dynasty emperors. In the past, the people of Phuoc Tich offered 400 of these pots to the imperial court each year. Phuoc Tich pots have thick walls, a dark brown body, a clear, resonant sound when tapped, and a gourd-like shape with a lid. They are excellent for cooking rice and stewing meat. Today, Phuoc Tich continues to develop its pottery craft with many unique product lines.

Dr. Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam Cultural and Scientific Activities Center, said that this thematic exhibition is not only an opportunity for the public and domestic and international tourists to learn about the ceramic works of the two famous craft villages and gain a deeper understanding of the long-standing cultural values of the Vietnamese people, but also an opportunity to affirm the spirit of solidarity, love for the homeland, especially the close relationship between Hanoi and Hue in the history of the country - two hearts beating together with love for the nation. This is also an opportunity for the public to better understand the role and value of handicraft industry heritage in today's life, thereby raising awareness of preserving and promoting the cultural values of the nation.
