Change your healthcare habits.

In Son Tra ward, many residents have started proactively getting regular health checkups instead of waiting until they are sick, thanks to free checkup programs at the grassroots level.

Ms. Mai Thi Lac (59 years old) went to the Son Tra Regional Health Center for a stomach check-up. There, upon learning about a free health check-up program, she registered to participate.

"Previously, I only went for checkups when I had symptoms and never had a regular health screening. Now that there's a free program, I'm participating to get a better understanding of my health," Ms. Lac said.

It's not just Mrs. Lac; many elderly people are gradually changing their health care habits. Previously, due to economic conditions and inconvenient transportation, Mrs. Huynh Thi Nga (72 years old), who had a history of persistent cough and shortness of breath, often bought medicine to treat herself instead of going to a medical facility.

During this check-up, she felt more reassured about her health: "The check-up was free, and the doctor provided thorough guidance, so I felt very reassured. I will go for regular check-ups to know my condition and won't buy medicine on my own anymore," Ms. Nga shared.

In reality, free health check-up programs not only help reduce costs for people but also contribute to changing perceptions and forming proactive health care habits in the community.

Strengthening screening, focusing on preventive healthcare.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Deputy Head of the Outpatient Department (Son Tra Regional Medical Center), regular screening plays a crucial role, especially for chronic diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Early detection helps develop appropriate treatment and prevention plans, limiting dangerous exacerbations.

In addition, regular check-ups help doctors monitor disease progression, adjust medication promptly, and improve treatment effectiveness. "People should have regular health check-ups every 6 to 12 months, proactively screening for respiratory diseases as well as metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes to detect them early and avoid complications," Dr. Hung advised.

Dr. Phan Quoc Tin, Head of the Planning and Operations Department (Son Tra Regional Health Center), said that the unit is stepping up free health check-up activities, aiming for every citizen to have a regular health check-up at least once a year, in accordance with Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo.

The programs are implemented synchronously and cover a wide range of target groups. By 2025, more than 7,000 elderly people in the An Hai - Son Tra inter-ward area will receive health check-ups; the rate of elderly people receiving regular check-ups will reach 100% with 17,456 people.

Healthcare services for students, those who have rendered meritorious services to the revolution, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, prenatal care, tuberculosis and lung disease screening, and health check-ups for workers in industrial zones are regularly maintained.

Through screening programs, many cases of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are detected early, especially in the elderly. In the respiratory field, many suspected cases of tuberculosis, severe asthma, or COPD are detected promptly, contributing to limiting complications.

Simultaneously, the unit is promoting the application of information technology, implementing electronic health records, electronic medical records, and cashless payments, contributing to shortening waiting times and improving service quality.

Medical staff have had their capacity enhanced through specialized projects and support from higher-level facilities; many advanced techniques have been implemented right at the local level, meeting the healthcare needs of the people.

According to Dr. Phan Quoc Tin, organizing health check-ups and screenings in the community is a crucial step from "treating disease" to "preventing disease," contributing to improving the quality of healthcare right from the grassroots level.

"People receive comprehensive and continuous health monitoring right at the frontline, thereby contributing to building a proactive and sustainable healthcare system," Dr. Tin emphasized.

The Son Tra Regional Health Center maintains a program of free regular health check-ups every Wednesday to Friday afternoon.

Specifically, on Wednesday afternoon, there will be examinations for respiratory illnesses and respiratory function tests; on Thursday afternoon, eye examinations and refraction tests; and on Friday afternoon, prenatal examinations and fetal heart monitoring.

Organizing appointments by specialty allows people to conveniently choose a suitable time and receive direct consultation from specialized doctors right at the grassroots level.
