Lang Son is one of the localities with a large number of patients with hematological diseases, especially congenital hemolytic anemia (Thalassemia). Without a stable blood supply, patients will face treatment delays, directly affecting their quality of life. However, the amount of blood available for treatment in the province is currently in short supply.
Mr. Tran Huu Thang, father of Tran Huu Nam (43 months old), block 26, Ky Lua ward said: My child has congenital hemolytic disease and often needs blood transfusions about once a month. At the end of July, because the hospital did not have enough blood reserves, fortunately the family had the right blood type to transfuse to the child for timely treatment.
From the beginning of 2025 to now, the whole province has organized 11 voluntary blood donation campaigns (5 campaigns less than the same period in 2024) with more than 8,300 people registering, receiving more than 5,300 units of blood, a decrease of nearly 200 units compared to the same period in 2024 and only reaching more than 48% of the set target. |
Dr. Nong Thi Nom, in charge of the Department of Hematology - Blood Transfusion, Provincial General Hospital, said: Normally, every year, the blood shortage only occurs for a short period of time in early July. However, this year, this situation has lasted from early July until now, the amount of blood reserve is only about 70% of the patient's needs, so it is only enough to serve emergency cases. Cases requiring chronic blood transfusion must mobilize relatives to donate blood (if the blood type is suitable). Currently, the most lacking blood types are blood types A and B.
Not only at the Provincial General Hospital, the blood shortage is occurring at most medical facilities in the province.
Ms. Nong Bich Thuan, President of the Provincial Red Cross Society (RCS), said: There are many reasons leading to the blood shortage, but mainly because the steering committee for mobilizing blood donations in communes and wards has not been established yet and because the need for blood for emergency care and patient care is increasing.
To overcome the blood shortage, it is known that the Red Cross Society is currently promoting connections with many influential figures in the fields of culture, sports , and arts to strongly spread the message of donating blood to save lives. In particular, after the two-level local government was put into stable operation, the Provincial People's Committee issued Document No. 5477 dated July 28, 2025 on the consolidation of the steering committee for blood donation mobilization at all levels. As of August 12, the whole province has consolidated 4 steering committees for blood donation mobilization in communes and wards.
In addition, the province builds and maintains typical models to develop a sustainable blood donation network. The province currently has 15 HMTN clubs with more than 1,000 members. Not only participating in regular blood donation campaigns, this force is also a "living blood source" to save people in emergency situations. In 2024 and the first 7 months of 2025 alone, club members donated more than 70 units of blood.
Mr. Trieu Gia Trong, Chairman of Lang Son Blood Donation Club, said: The club was established in 2022 and currently has more than 160 members. Since the beginning of the year, 8 volunteers have donated blood at provincial hospitals. In the coming time, members are always ready to donate blood when receiving information from the hospital, ready to be present at any time when someone needs blood. In addition, members also actively promote and mobilize relatives, friends and colleagues to donate blood.
The above solutions contribute to reducing the pressure of anemia. In the coming time, the Provincial Red Cross Association (the standing agency of the Provincial Steering Committee for Blood Donation Mobilization) will continue to urge the consolidation of the Steering Committee for Blood Donation Mobilization in communes and wards and strengthen coordination with the Steering Committee for Blood Donation Mobilization in communes and wards to propagate, mobilize, and soon organize blood donation programs; expand typical blood donation models, create a stable and sustainable blood source to serve the treatment work...
