Young faces at major shows

At the opening art program of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day on the morning of April 30 in Ho Chi Minh City, along with many veteran faces of the country's art scene, there were also two young artists, both in age and career, performing a revolutionary song "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City". They were Phuong My Chi and Double 2T, who are better known in youth music genres.

The performance of Phuong My Chi and Double 2T is one of the three revolutionary songs of the art program celebrating April 30 that entered the Top Trending Music of Youtube on this occasion. Currently, after 2 weeks of being uploaded to Youtube, the MV “Spring in Ho Chi Minh City” of the two young singers is currently holding the 9th position of the Top Trending chart and has reached more than 1.7 million views.

After the MV “Continue writing the story of peace ” by Vo Ha Tram and Dong Hung also in this program, “Spring in Ho Chi Minh City” by Phuong My Chi and Double 2T is also a rare revolutionary song to achieve this high achievement in a chart that has always been considered the “territory” of youth music.

Phuong My Chi and Double 2T are not the first young artists this year to participate in special art programs, performing revolutionary songs that have long been reserved for "red music" artists, with more chamber music.

Previously, many young artists were invited or boldly tried their hand at revolutionary music, with very unique ways of performing, bringing completely new colors to this music genre that seemed to be selective for young audiences.

In the program "Light Concert - Welcome New Year 2025" organized by Nhan Dan Newspaper in coordination with Hanoi People's Committee on the evening of January 18 at the intersection of Nguyen Hoang Ton - Lac Long Quan, Tay Ho district, Hanoi, the audience was extremely surprised when Hoang Hiep's fiery rock voice performed very smoothly the song "Nguoi Ha Noi" by musician Nguyen Dinh Thi.

Musician Duong Cam, the program's music director, said that Do Hoang Hiep himself was initially quite hesitant when he learned that he would be performing this song with a symphony orchestra. However, with encouragement and the effort to explore new possibilities and overcome his own limits, the talented Hoang Hiep "overcame the obstacles" and created a truly unique performance.

Also in the program “Light Concert - Welcome New Year 2025”, the combined performance between People's Artist Thanh Hoa and singer Ha Le in the song “Lac Lang Lang Hoa” also surprised the audience. Ha Le's rap part was like a youthful, fresh touch that made the song more lively and youthful.

Hoang Hiep and Ha Le are two artists who came out of the show "Anh trai vu ngan cong gai" (The Brother Who Overcame Thousands of Difficulties) to try their hand at new "territories" with the spirit of discovering new things and discovering themselves.

Along with Ha Le, Hoang Hiep, many other young artists from “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” have also been invited to participate in many major art programs on the occasion of the country’s major anniversaries. Young music artists such as Huy R, Neko Le, Thanh Duy, Liem Binh Phat, Dang Khoi participated with People’s Artist Tu Long, famous football player Hong Son, artist Khanh Hung in the program “Dat nuoc tron niem vui” with the song “Bai ca cay lua” by musician Hoang Van, with Rymastic writing the rap lyrics.

Soobin, Jun Pham, Ha Le, People's Artist Tu Long and famous football player Hong Son participated in the program "Spring of Unity" with the song "Belief in Victory". Singer Anh Tu sang with People's Artist Tu Long in the mash-up "Mother loves child - Volunteer" in the program "North-South Promise". Hoa Minzy sang with People's Artist Thanh Hoa also in "North-South Promise"... These are some of the many young music artists who have renewed themselves in revolutionary songs on important occasions of the country.

"Renewing" revolutionary music

One special thing is that revolutionary songs, through the performance of young artists, have brought new breath and new vitality without losing their inherent heroism, excitement and spirit.

Many songs are created with additional rap lyrics, as a new way of telling stories through music, close to young people while still maintaining the majesty of history.

These new arrangements can be seen most clearly in the program “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai”, when some songs through this new performance received enthusiastic support from a large audience, and became a new, more attractive, youthful, and more popular version, typically “Mother loves child” by musician Nguyen Van Ty, “Ao mua dong” by musician Do Nhuan and “Chiec khan pieu” by Colonel, musician Doan Nho.

The artists of "Anh trai vu ngan cong gai" performed a remix of the song "Chiec khan pieu".

Musician Doan Nho himself also gave words of praise for the renewal of his song “Chiếc Khăn Piêu”: “I have directly listened to the song “Chiếc Khăn Piêu” with many variations by young singers. Previously, Tung Duong performed this song in a very unique way and was liked by the audience. Later, there was a group of singers on the show “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” singing in a choir style, with many new variations. The song was developed, applying many new things, but in the end, “Chiếc Khăn Piêu” is still new every day. Through each stage, the song is transformed and created by young artists to suit today’s young audience. As an author, I very much welcome that.”

Musician Doan Nho also commented that the way these revolutionary songs were renewed reflects the needs of today. “A few decades ago, no one could have imagined that the song 'Chiec khan pieu', which was only meant for one person to sing 'Tieng toi rang rung rung. Sao khong ai trap doi', could be sung in such a creative way with a group of male artists. Even Tung Duong was innovative, not to mention the artists of 'Anh trai vuon ngan cong gai'. As an author, I am very grateful for those creations" - Colonel, musician Doan Nho emphasized.

Train for emotional depth

However, many artists specializing in revolutionary and academic music also believe that, although it is a good sign, young music artists also need to train themselves to express the essence of revolutionary songs, because of the seriousness and sacred meaning in those songs.

Singer Pham Thu Ha, a semi-classical artist and a familiar face of revolutionary music in major programs, said that she appreciates the efforts to renew songs of this genre. But any innovation must maintain the dignity of the work and a deep respect for history. Using facile, superficial things as an excuse for widespread dissemination is an act of betrayal of the spirit of revolutionary songs.

“Revolutionary songs themselves not only require vocal techniques but also require emotional depth, a rich life experience, an immersion in ideology, history and soul. If the artist only "sings" revolutionary songs as if singing a popular love song, only embellishing with superficial techniques but lacking inner vibrations, then no matter how refined the timbre is, how magnificent the performance is, all will be just layers of empty, soulless and... superficial sounds. And obviously, sophisticated and demanding audiences will not have difficulty recognizing that defect” - Pham Thu Ha said.

For female artists, great art, especially art closely linked to the fate of the nation, has never and will never tolerate indulgence.

Sharing this view, violinist Trinh Minh Hien believes that revolutionary music should not be used to attract views, or through it to achieve any purpose other than to honor and show gratitude for history, as well as the value of sacrifices.

Artist Trinh Minh Hien believes that it is encouraging for young artists to spread patriotism, however, revolutionary music itself is eternal and does not need to be preserved. Therefore, only by cultivating true emotions with deep understanding and gratitude can one perform successfully. Hopefully, this will help each artist become a torch spreading patriotism and national pride to the audience, not just a formality.

Trinh Minh Hien emphasized that as a singer, being able to sing about the Fatherland is also an honor. Two years ago, she herself made many products honoring the country such as "Tien Quan Ca", "Dat Nuoc Tron Niep Vui"..., at that time, there were very few artists interested in and making their own products.

The artist also believes that, now, revolutionary music is more popular among young people and young singers, which is also a good thing, but revolutionary music belongs to the resistance period, full of ideals, and will always be "strong" enough for all generations to love. Only when there is an ideal can one sing successfully. Only a young generation that aspires to an ideal can understand and love revolutionary music. As for any innovation, it is very good, but if it does not go into the core of action, it is still just a formality.

“In revolutionary music there is “fire”, “energy”, and “spirit”. We must cultivate courage, will and gratitude so that when we sing and play, we will be a united bloc, a united nation, and then revolutionary music will be a bridge connecting generations” - artist Trinh Minh Hien expressed.
