Should I roll down the windows while the car is running?

Air Pollution

Opening the car door while driving means that the driver and passengers will be directly exposed to dust in the air.

From an experiment that measured the concentration of air pollutants in a car when the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system was on. The results showed that harmful particles were reduced by 80% when the windows were closed and the fan was on.

Typically, cabin air filters also help filter out a significant amount of pollutants. However, using recirculation mode is not always recommended, especially in areas where the outside temperature of the car is higher. Instead, experts say driving during off-peak hours can reduce air pollution exposure by 91% in the morning and 40% in the evening.

The best option is to use a car with air conditioning or switch to new electric cars that do not emit emissions directly into the environment.

Impact on hearing

Cars typically make a lot of noise while they are running. Different engine types in different cars will make different noises. For example, a gasoline engine produces 85 dB of noise, while a hybrid, electric motor, or small 4-cylinder engine may be quieter. In addition, wind resistance, the whistling sound of the wind when the car is running, significantly increases the noise.

In particular, the main cause of noise pollution in cities is traffic. A passing car can also impact sound up to 100 dB for a moment. This is the Doppler effect, which amplifies sound to an extreme level, the sound is even louder when the car window is down.

Therefore, experts also encourage drivers not to lower the windows while the car is moving because it can easily distract and not ensure safety while driving. If you need to open the windows to reduce stuffiness, do so when driving during off-peak hours or when stopping to limit exposure to air pollution and noise.

In addition, if there are children in the car, not lowering the window should be a priority, because sometimes naughty children can accidentally stick their heads out if the window is open. This will be very dangerous if a collision or an unexpected accident occurs.
