Rodri is back. |
Rodri embodies the fighting spirit and burning desire to compete. He is the kind of player any coach would want in their squad – someone who always wants to give, always puts the team first, and is ready to return to the pitch as soon as possible, even if it means overcoming the most demanding physical limitations.
But sometimes, those very qualities need to be… restrained. And nobody does that better than Pep Guardiola.
When reason prevails over emotion
Last September, Rodri suffered a serious injury – a torn anterior cruciate ligament – an injury that takes many players at least a year to fully recover from. But Rodri refused to accept that scenario.
From the moment he entered the recovery room, he was determined to return as quickly as possible. “The doctors said I needed a year off, but I knew I wouldn’t need 12 months,” he said on Spanish television, with an unusual resolve.
No one blames Rodri for his eagerness. A player who has just won the Ballon d'Or and is at the peak of his career can hardly bear the feeling of being left out of the game. He wants to play his final Premier League matches, wants to be part of the Spanish national team in the Nations League, and further afield, the Club World Cup. For Rodri, time is money, and each match is a part of the legacy he is striving to build.
And he kept his word: on May 20th, 241 days after his injury, Rodri made his comeback in the match against Bournemouth. The moment he stepped onto the pitch in the 83rd minute, everything seemed to be relieved. But for Guardiola, it was only the beginning.
Rodri may have been ready in his mind, but Pep knew his body wasn't. And he didn't let emotions—whether his players' or his own—influence crucial decisions. Therefore, just five days later, in the match against Fulham, Rodri didn't play a single minute, even though the team was aiming for a Champions League spot.
Pep is not in a hurry to use Rodri. |
On May 26th, the Spanish national team's squad was announced. Rodri was not included. For many, this was a surprise, even a disappointment. But coach Luis de la Fuente stated concisely and completely: "Rodri has just returned after eight months and has only played 10 minutes. That's all."
Behind that statement lies a whole strategy. Pep subtly influenced, advised, and protected his protégé using the authority and trust he had built over many years at Man City. In a context where Rodri was desperate to return, Guardiola was the one who pulled him out of the whirlwind of fame. Not to hold him back, but to protect him.
The FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ is a grand stage where continental champions compete to assert their global dominance. Given his stature and class, Rodri deserves a chance to play. But Pep remains true to his principle: caution, one step at a time.
Against Wydad, Rodri came on as a substitute, playing for about half an hour. The same was true against Al Ain – another 29 minutes from the bench. In total, he's only played an hour since his return. Not much, but enough to gauge the rhythm, get used to the high intensity again. And most importantly, to avoid any mistakes that could have rendered the past 11 months meaningless.
Rodri is being used carefully by Man City. |
After the match against Al Ain, Pep said: “He played well, for more than half an hour. But it was still difficult, which is normal – he just recovered from a long-term injury. We miss Rodri a lot, but things have to happen gradually.”
Don't rush with what's most precious.
Rodri is not just an outstanding midfielder. He is a cornerstone, a playmaker, and the tactical brain of Man City. And for Guardiola, such an asset needs to be preserved with absolute patience. Pep understands that in modern football, where schedules are packed and immense pressure surrounds every step of the player, haste is the most ruthless enemy.
By holding Rodri back when he was most eager, Pep demonstrated a very special kind of power – not the power to impose, but the power to protect. And thanks to that, Rodri had the opportunity to return not just to play a few games at the end of the season, but to continue to be the heart and soul of Man City for many years to come.
In the tactical world of football, sometimes the right thing to do isn't to sprint forward, but to stop at the right moment. And Guardiola, as always, knows exactly when that moment is.
