In Can Tho, a rice storage facility located along Provincial Road 921 suffered serious subsidence, causing 10 billion VND in damage and disrupting traffic in the area.

The subsidence occurred yesterday afternoon in Trung Hung commune, Co Do district, and is still ongoing today. A fairly sturdy warehouse (built with brick walls and corrugated iron roof), located near the Thot Not canal and equipped with a conveyor belt for transporting rice, has cracked and collapsed in large chunks, sinking 0.3-1 meter below the road surface.

Provincial Road 921 in this area (connecting Co Do District with Thot Not District) continues to show long cracks that are widening.

Mr. Le Chi Phuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Co Do District, said that the landslide affected the warehouse area, which is over 135 meters long and over 11 meters wide, covering a total area of more than 1,500 square meters, with estimated total damage of approximately 10 billion VND. The subsidence also caused cracks in the road surface, measuring 48 meters in length and 3.5 meters in width, equivalent to 168 square meters.

"Local authorities are mobilizing forces to assist in dismantling the warehouse, relocating goods and assets, and installing warning signs in the dangerous area, as well as rerouting and regulating traffic," Mr. Phuong said.

Initially, local authorities believe the collapse was most likely caused by a prolonged drought, low water levels in the Thot Not canal, and the frequent passage of barges carrying supplies and rice. At the time of the incident, the warehouse contained a large amount of goods, creating significant gravitational force on the foundation.

The prolonged drought over the past several months has caused a series of landslides and mudslides in the Mekong Delta. The most serious cases are in Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, with over 600 landslide points along 132 canals, totaling nearly 19 km in length, causing approximately 20 billion VND in damage. In U Minh Thuong district, Kien Giang province, over 300 landslides were recorded along numerous roads, totaling nearly 8.2 km in length; many houses were damaged; and total damage exceeded 90 billion VND.

According to some experts, the heatwave caused the canals to dry up, creating a large difference in elevation between the road surface and the water level in the canal, leading to subsidence. Dredging further deepened the canal bottom, and the weak soil in the area also contributed to the incident.
