At this time, the Na Bac field in Dong Hai commune, Tien Yen district is completely white with Atlantic potato flowers. From a small field that tested this potato variety in 2021, up to now, Atlantic potatoes have not only covered 5 hectares of Na Bac area, but also 12 hectares in other villages in Dong Hai commune and nearly 10 hectares in Dong Ngu, Yen Than, and Hai Lang communes.
Atlantic potatoes first appeared in the fields of Binh Duong and Dong Trieu City around 2011. It was thought that this type of plant was only suitable for dry, loose soil and relatively high temperature climates in the western localities of the province, but they also adapted very quickly to loamy soil and temperatures that were always lower than the average in the eastern localities, including Tien Yen.
Under the diligent hands of the members of the Atlantic Potato Cooperative in Na Bac, Dong Hai Commune, Tien Yen District, Atlantic potato plants grow quickly, healthily, with green stems and leaves, wide, round roots and tubers... In previous potato harvests, Na Bac had a yield of 20 tons/ha. This year's potato crop is only in the early stages of the cultivation process, but Na Bac's Atlantic potato fields are expected to yield 22 tons/ha. Ms. Tu Thi Cuc, Head of the Atlantic Potato Cooperative in Na Bac, said: This year, we have planted seeds very safely. The seeds are supplied directly from the Institute of Agricultural Biology. The cultivation process is favorable, on time, with enough water, the potato plants are carefully cared for, and have now flowered and begun to form tubers. If there are no abnormalities, in the next 20 days we can determine the number of tubers/plant; recognize the level of development of the tuber until the plant can be harvested in January of the following year.
In Na Bac in particular and some fields of Tien Yen in general, in the past, the 3 winter months were the time when the fields were often left idle. Currently, potato cultivation helps Tien Yen increase the value of the land. This farming model also has a connection between 4 parties, including farmers, the state, businesses and scientists . Currently, in each potato crop, people are provided with seeds and cultivation techniques by the Institute of Agricultural Biology; after harvest, the standard potato output (accounting for 70-90% of the total output) is purchased by Orion Vina Food Company Limited at a stable price. The number of substandard potatoes (small, deformed or cracked tubers) will be purchased by some livestock enterprises right in the field. Thanks to this connection, after about 100 days of cultivation, potatoes bring farmers about 400 million VND/ha, minus costs, the profit is about 40%.
It is worth mentioning that after each potato crop, people quickly plant rice crops. And these rice fields often grow and develop better, achieving higher yields than other normal fields. Ms. Do Thi Duyen, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Yen district, said: Potatoes prefer soil with enough water but good ventilation, this plant itself has the characteristic of improving the soil, so after the potato crop, if rice or other crops are planted, they will benefit, the plants will grow and develop well...
It is known that according to the plan, Tien Yen district will continue to tighten the Atlantic potato production chain, continue to expand the area and mobilize people to update and innovate modern farming processes, increase the rate of applying mechanization. This is aimed at further increasing revenue and profit from the Atlantic potato farming model, thereby improving income and quality of life.
