Germany will send troops to Australia for the first time to take part in the Talisman Sabre joint military exercise, which will involve some 30,000 personnel from 12 other countries, in a sign of Berlin’s growing interest in the Indo- Pacific region.
Speaking to reporters, General Alfons Mais, Commander of the German Army, emphasized that the Indo- Pacific is "a region of great importance for Germany as well as for the European Union (EU) due to economic interdependence."
He said about 240 soldiers, including 170 paratroopers and 40 marines, will participate in the largest-ever exercise, which is held every two years.
By participating in the exercise, Germany hopes to demonstrate that its military is a “reliable and capable partner contributing to the stability of the rules-based order in the region.”
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023 takes place from July 22 to August 4 in locations including Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and New South Wales.
The 14-day exercise will include large-scale logistics support, multi-domain firepower demonstrations, ground operations, amphibious landings and air operations.
German soldiers will join about 30,000 soldiers from 12 countries, including Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, France and the UK, to practice amphibious operations and jungle warfare.
