First of all, it must be affirmed that the number of universities specializing in economics is not as large as that of technical and technological universities. However, the enrollment rate has the opposite trend.
Overwhelming enrollment economics
The 2024 admission statistics show that the field of business management has the most enrollments. The percentage of candidates admitted to this field is 25% of the total number of admitted candidates. Thus, for every 100 admitted candidates, 25 candidates choose to study business management.
At first glance, the enrollment rate of the business management field clearly overwhelms other fields. However, when analyzing the number of majors in each field more closely, we can see how terrible this difference is.

According to the 2022 training major list of the Ministry of Education and Training, the field of business management has only 18 training majors, recruiting 25% of the total number of admitted candidates.
Computer and information technology has 12 majors, enrollment rate is 9%.
The field of engineering technology is ranked 3rd with an enrollment rate of 9% while there are 29 majors. Similarly, the field of engineering has 42 majors but only enrolls 5%.
These figures are similar to the 2023 admissions. Even the percentage of candidates admitted to the business management block has increased.
Many opinions say that the fields of computer - information technology, engineering technology, and engineering are STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and should be grouped into one field.
But even when these three areas are grouped together, the differences become even more apparent.

It can be seen that when the three fields are grouped together, the enrollment rate of these three fields is 26%, 1% higher than the field of business management. However, when considering the number of fields, business and management are nearly 4 times less but the enrollment rate is equivalent. The difference is even greater.
Why?

The choice of major and school of study of candidates depends on many different factors. Therefore, the decision of candidates to study economics, engineering or technology is a personal decision and is not discussed in the framework of this article.
Here, we only discuss the fact that there are too many universities enrolling students in economics, including universities specializing in engineering and technology. Preliminary statistics show that except for schools in the fields of health, education, culture and sports, most universities today more or less enroll students in economics.
At the University of Transport Technology, in addition to engineering and technology majors related to the transport sector, there are also many majors in the economic field such as business administration, e-commerce, finance and banking, accounting, international business, and marketing.
Similarly, Can Tho University of Technology recruits many economic majors such as finance and banking, accounting, and business administration. Another famous university in the field of technology and engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, also recruits many majors in the field of business management such as business administration, accounting, finance and banking.

The University of Electricity also has economic majors: finance and banking, business administration, accounting, auditing, e-commerce, and marketing. The number of majors in the field of business management accounts for 40% of the total number of majors enrolled at the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology.
Universities such as Mining and Geology, Irrigation, Transport, Vietnam Aviation Academy... are schools that specialize in engineering and technology, but now also train many economic and service sectors.
Of course, technology and engineering still make up the majority of the school's training programs, but many other economic majors such as finance and banking, business administration, accounting, etc. are also recruited by the schools.
Among the 6 technical pedagogical schools, only the University of Technical Education (University of Danang) does not enroll students in business management majors. The remaining schools enroll students in economic majors.
Of which, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education has the largest number of economic majors. The majors the school enrolls include business administration, accounting, international business, and e-commerce.
In the fields of agriculture, forestry, and environmental resources, the expansion into economic training is even more extensive. The number of economic majors at the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture and the University of Forestry is up to nearly ten majors.
On the other hand, some universities specializing in economics have expanded into training in technology, but the number of majors is not large.
