According to data from Box Office Vietnam, two films, "Underworld Beauty Salon" and "Blood Moon Feast 8," recorded unsold tickets on June 1st, before the end of their screening schedule.
This slump in sales had been ongoing for several weeks prior. Currently, The Underworld Beauty Salon has completely withdrawn from online ticketing systems. Meanwhile, Blood Moon Feast 8 maintains a single screening on June 2nd and 3rd, before leaving theaters on June 4th.
Released on April 24th, Blood Moon Feast 8 concluded its theatrical run with a cumulative total revenue of 33 billion VND. The Underworld Beauty Salon ended earlier, with less than a month since its release, bringing in 12.6 billion VND from special screenings on May 6th. Both figures are below the break-even point, as estimates ranged from 40 to 70 billion VND respectively.

The film "Underworld Beauty Salon" features a cast including Xuan Lan, Ngoc Trinh, Le Xuan Tien, Rima Thanh Vy, and others. The story follows Thanh, a female doctor forced to take a job at Mrs. Xuan's mysterious beauty salon to earn money to save her critically ill lover. From there, she becomes entangled in a series of bizarre phenomena occurring in the isolated hospital nestled in the mountains.
The film's screenwriter attempts to weave in a variety of new ideas, from folk spirituality and physical horror to psychological drama, but the lack of coherence in the plot makes the overall narrative confusing.
The latter half of the film reveals many illogical points, particularly in the way the characters react to supernatural phenomena. The frequent repetition of sudden jump scares diminishes the tension. Meanwhile, the lead actress Ngoc Trinh's performance in the climactic scenes mainly consists of screaming, lacking the psychological depth to convince the audience.
From its early days, this horror film struggled to gain traction, leading to repeated cuts to its screenings. In its final stages, the film generated almost no revenue, selling only a handful of tickets across all its screenings.
As for Blood Moon Party 8 , this is a remake of the hit Japanese film One Cut of the Dead , directed, written, and co-produced by Phan Gia Nhật Linh. Belonging to the dark comedy genre and featuring many well-known actors and guest stars, the film was once considered a top contender for the April 30th holiday film season.
However, the film's storytelling and content demonstrate its limited appeal to the mainstream audience in Vietnamese theaters. The comedic elements focus heavily on the filmmaking environment and showbiz life, making it difficult for viewers unfamiliar with these fields to appreciate.
Amidst slow ticket sales and consistently low box office rankings, a personal scandal involving lead actress Miu Le and drug use officially ended the project's chances of a turnaround at the box office.
The failure of these two films continues the trend of Vietnamese film projects losing money in recent times, reflecting clear shifts in the market. The biggest reason lies in the quality of the scripts, as many films reveal weaknesses in the writing process, lacking internal logic in plot development and having unconvincing character psychology.
Furthermore, audiences are becoming increasingly discerning, no longer easily choosing tickets simply because a film has a star-studded cast or is an adaptation of a popular foreign script.
Ultimately, the public's aggressive reaction to artists' personal scandals or legal violations is creating significant commercial risks, requiring filmmakers to be more cautious in controlling the image of their projects.
