The Vietnamese sports community is abuzz with rumors that Mr. Luu Tu Bao - President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation (VBF) - is facing judicial trouble in the US and is even at risk of being extradited.

This information quickly attracted attention because Mr. Bao is a businessman who has been involved in the domestic boxing movement for many years and is also the founder of Saigon Sports Club - the largest private martial arts center in Vietnam.

However, according to confirmation from VBF, the reality is far different from what has been spread. Mr. Bao went to the US in February 2025 to take care of his biological son's funeral - a huge personal loss, completely unrelated to criminal matters.

In the US, he met a group of Vietnamese people who had a conflict 20 years ago. The incident led to a civil lawsuit in the first instance court, but the plaintiffs failed to provide convincing evidence. Mr. Bao won the case, but under US law, the case still has to be heard at the appeals court in early January 2026.

With the information that Mr. Liu Xiubao may be "arrested for drug smuggling, with an extradition order to Australia" released on the San Francisco Public Safety News page.

Specifically, the San Francisco Public Safety News reported: a man named "Bao Luu" was accused of trying to bring 178 kg of cocaine into Australia during 2016-2017. He was arrested in California in April, appeared in court and had an extradition request from Australia.

According to Tri Thuc Znews's research, this is a news production website on the wordpress platform since the end of 2023, and has been marked as a "news site that needs verification" by a website security testing platform.

In fact, when verifying the information by looking up news on two official websites, The Australian Federal Police (AFP, afp.gov.au) of the Australian police and The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA, dea.gov) of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, no news related to the keyword "Tu Bao Luu" appeared.

Thus, it can be understood that the news about Liu Xiubao's "judicial troubles" in the US does not have any clear basis for verification.

Currently, VBF has sent official dispatches to the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request verification and clarification of information related to Mr. Bao.

Responding to the media, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung - Vice President and General Secretary of VBF - informed: "Mr. Luu Tu Bao still maintains contact and directs the activities of the Federation remotely. The National Strong Teams Tournament in Dak Lak (April 2025) and the National Youth Championship in Ninh Binh (July 2025) are still taking place as planned".

In the context of the President's absence for more than half a year, the VBF Standing Committee held an urgent meeting on September 4. Here, the Executive Committee unanimously requested Mr. Bao to sign a power of attorney in accordance with the charter, assigning the right to manage the activities of the Federation to one of the Vice Presidents.

The authorization period is extended until the end of March 2026, to ensure that all work is not interrupted.

In the past, VBF's annual tournaments - especially the 2025 National Boxing Championship to be held in Ho Chi Minh City this October - have been organized with socialized funding, independent of the state budget.

"This shows that VBF is still operating stably, even when the Chairman is not present in person," a VBF member shared.

According to the plan, after completing the authorization procedure, VBF will report to the relevant authorities such as the Department of Sports and Physical Training, the Ministry of Culture - Sports - Tourism, the Ministry of Home Affairs and issue an official press release.

This move aims to reassure public opinion and at the same time affirm transparency in the management and operation of the Federation.
