The digital travel platform Agoda has just announced its list of the most popular mountain and small town destinations in Asia for 2025. In this ranking, the town of Sa Pa (formerly) - Lao Cai, Vietnam, ranks 6th, confirming its growing appeal on the regional tourism map.
The data was compiled from tourist searches for accommodation in towns with populations under 50,000, between February 15 and August 15, 2025, across eight Asian markets. The top three positions were held by Cameron Highlands (Malaysia), Khao Yai (Thailand), and Puncak (Indonesia), respectively. Following them were Fujikawaguchiko (Japan) and Kenting (Taiwan), before Sa Pa in Vietnam entered the top six.
Sa Pa is enveloped in the early morning mist.
Known for its terraced rice fields and ethnic minority villages, Sa Pa captivates visitors with the spectacular natural beauty of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, home to Fansipan peak, reaching 3,143 meters – dubbed the "roof of Indochina". Beyond its magnificent scenery, Sa Pa is also appealing due to its vibrant local culture, from its highland markets to its unique traditional customs.
Data on this platform shows that searches related to Sa Pa increased by 21% in the first half of 2025, reflecting the growing interest of both domestic and international tourists. Beyond its scenic beauty, Sa Pa offers a unique experience through its four seasons: spring with blooming peach and plum blossoms, summer with lush green rice paddies, autumn with golden ripe rice fields, and in many years, winter with the town covered in snow.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Lam, Country Director of Agoda in Vietnam, commented: "Sa Pa's inclusion in the Asian ranking reflects its unique landscape and diverse heritage, which are increasingly captivating tourists. From the vast terraced rice fields and trekking routes through the mountains to the distinctive traditional culture, visitors find in Sa Pa authentic, rich, and different experiences compared to the pace of life in big cities."
Besides Sa Pa, Asia also features many other famous towns and mountainous regions on the list, such as Munnar (India) and Pyeongchang-gun (South Korea). This shows that the trend of nature tourism, seeking tranquil spaces, and connecting with local cultures is becoming increasingly popular.
Amidst Vietnam's tourism industry continuously setting new records for international visitors, Sa Pa's recognition at the continental level further reinforces its image as a safe, friendly, and culturally rich destination.
