In the first 6 months of 2025, Lao Cai province's tourism industry continued to record positive results, maintaining strong recovery and growth momentum in both the number of visitors and total revenue from tourists.

The total number of tourists to Lao Cai is estimated at 5.8 million, an increase of 41% over the same period in 2024 (4.1 million). Of which, domestic tourists reached more than 5.3 million, international tourists reached nearly 539 thousand, showing clear signs of recovery from the foreign tourist market.

In terms of tourism, the number of day visitors reached more than 1.7 million, and the number of overnight visitors reached over 4.1 million, contributing significantly to the stable growth of the industry. With this result, the number of visitors reached 58.49% of the 2025 plan (10 million visitors).

Not only did the volume increase, total revenue from tourists in the first 6 months of the year also reached a high level, estimated at 19 trillion VND, an increase of 47% over the same period in 2024 (13 trillion VND) and reaching 44.39% of the yearly plan (44,750 billion VND).

Revenue from international visitors accounts for a significant proportion, reflecting the trend of increasing spending and length of stay of tourists, especially at high-quality tourist destinations.

Visitors to Lao Cai not only concentrate in Sa Pa but also in many neighboring highland communes with many new tourism products.

In which, linking agricultural production with eco-tourism, preserving cultural identity and natural landscapes has helped Lao Cai have impressive visitor growth.

According to statistics from the Lao Cai Department of Tourism, the province currently has nearly 200 homestays in operation, and hundreds of OCOP products have been put into service for tourism. Many households have escaped poverty thanks to the model of combining agriculture and tourism.

From simple stilt houses, many households in Ta Van commune, Ban Ho commune (old Sa Pa town) or Bac Ha commune (Na Hoi commune, old Bac Ha district) have boldly invested and renovated them into homestays to welcome guests.

What's special is that visitors not only rest, but also work in the fields with the host, cook bamboo rice, dye indigo fabric or learn to dance with the flute.

Bac Ha is famous for its corn wine and Tam Hoa plums. Now, the people have turned these products into "tourism brands".

Summer visitors can pick plums themselves, winter visitors can experience fermenting corn wine, and buy them as gifts. In Bat Xat, the ancient Shan Tuyet tea hills covered in mist not only produce specialty tea but also attract visitors to visit and experience the traditional processing process.

Not only cuisine, many festivals and traditional customs are also preserved by the people, becoming "spiritual specialties" in tourist tours.

The Gau Tao Festival of the Mong people, the Fire Dance Festival of the Dao people, or the Bac Ha fair - where the cultural colors of the highlands converge - all attract a large number of visitors. Many folk artists are invited to participate in performing activities, helping visitors not only to enjoy the scenery but also to "live" in the indigenous cultural life.

Rural tourism development is identified as one of the fundamental solutions and driving force to promote sustainable new rural construction, contributing to promoting the advantages and distinct values of agriculture, rural areas and farmers.

At the same time, building new rural areas is a foundation to support and facilitate the diverse and sustainable development of agricultural and rural tourism.

Agricultural production associated with ecotourism development today not only contributes positively to economic restructuring and expanding product output, but also helps preserve and promote cultural values in rural areas as well as increase the brand value of regional specialty products.
