Newcastle United continued their impressive home form by winning their sixth consecutive match at St James' Park, beating title contenders Man City 2-1 in the early morning of November 23. The result in round 12 of the Premier League caused Pep Guardiola's team to miss the opportunity to narrow the gap with leaders Arsenal to one point.
Despite conceding most of the possession in the first half, Newcastle still showed initiative in their counter-attacking defense. Jacob Murphy created the first dangerous chance with a cross for Nick Woltemade, but the German striker's header was not defeated by Gianluigi Donnarumma. On the other side, Jeremy Doku continuously penetrated the right wing, forcing Fabian Schar to jump to block Phil Foden's shot.

The home side almost opened the scoring after 30 minutes when Harvey Barnes fired wide of the post after Murphy’s sensational pass, although replays showed he may have been offside. City had the clearest chance before half-time but Foden sent the ball wide after some impressive play with Rayan Cherki.
After the break, the tempo of the match slowed down before exploding in the 60th minute. From a quick counter-attack, Bruno Guimaraes passed the ball to Barnes to shoot a precise low shot to open the score. However, Newcastle's advantage only lasted 5 minutes, when Ruben Dias took advantage of a mistake in the penalty area to equalize 1-1 for the visitors.
Before Man City could stabilize the game, Barnes continued to shine. He rushed in to score after Guimaraes' header hit the crossbar, and the goal was recognized after a lengthy VAR check. In the remaining minutes, Man City completely controlled the ball but could not penetrate the "Magpies"' resilient defense.

With this important victory, Newcastle moved up to 14th place and helped coach Eddie Howe beat Man City for the first time in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Guardiola's team remained in third place and continued to show inconsistent form on the road, having won only 2/6 away games this season.
