“Greening” agriculture: The journey from thinking to practice

In the context of increasingly severe climate change and gradually depleted resources, Lam Dong has identified “greening” agriculture as a key goal. This is not just a slogan, but is defined as a profound revolution from thinking to action, aiming to form a sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Innovation in thinking

To improve agricultural products to be not only “clean” but also “healthy”, Lam Dong focuses on innovation in thinking, in which the main focus is on applying science - technology and digital transformation. From the fields to the dining table, all production processes are encouraged by agricultural extension officers to be transparent, not only to build trust among consumers but also to protect the environment in a sustainable way.

The province has been making efforts to focus on transforming from traditional production models to high-tech agriculture and smart agriculture, towards sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture for many years. Many policies have been issued to support businesses, cooperatives and people to access new technologies and apply them to production.

Lam Dong farmers are increasingly familiar with new, advanced technologies in the world such as: humidity monitoring sensors, automatic irrigation systems that are economical and safe, crop forecasting data and traceability using QR codes.

Farmers are also encouraged to apply smart farming methods, use organic fertilizers, and minimize chemicals and pesticides. In particular, the application of digital technology is focused on for more effective management. A series of names that have positioned their brands in the agricultural market can be mentioned, such as: Phong Thuy, Son Tra Company Limited, Xuan Truong Organic Vegetable Cooperative, etc.

The province also encourages public-private partnership models in research and transfer of technical advances, especially in breeding high-yield and high-quality plant and animal breeds suitable to local climate and soil conditions. Many new varieties of flowers, vegetables and trees have been bred, including many vegetable and fruit varieties that have developed into the province's own brands.

Overcoming challenges

Possessing diverse natural conditions, climate and ecology, Lam Dong has the necessary factors to “green” agriculture and develop sustainably. Lam Dong’s goal is to build a green agriculture, not only bringing high productivity but also minimizing negative impacts on the environment, preserving biodiversity and improving the quality of life for the people.

However, despite many achievements, Lam Dong still has a lot of work to do as there are still "bottlenecks" that need to be removed, such as: fragmented production, high investment costs for clean technology, unsynchronized technical infrastructure and lack of high-quality human resources.

The model of growing plants in net houses and greenhouses in the province currently brings high economic efficiency, but also causes negative impacts on the landscape and environment. Therefore, the province has developed a project to reduce the number of greenhouses and greenhouses.

According to Mr. Ton Thien San - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province, in the coming time, the province will focus on developing agriculture and rural areas in depth and sustainably. The focus is on developing high-tech agriculture, associated with ecological agriculture, circular agriculture and urban agriculture.

Along with that, we will also promote the development and application of science and technology to serve green transformation, focusing on building a digital, unified and interconnected environmental, resource and climate change database system. At the same time, we will increase investment in advanced technology in waste treatment and environmental monitoring.

The province also focuses on promoting economic cooperation between the agricultural sector and the trade, service and tourism sectors. The goal is to build and develop key agricultural products with high quality and strong brands, associated with high-value processing, preservation and export processes.

Currently, the province has about 107,300 hectares of high-tech agricultural production and more than 149,700 hectares of safe production. Lam Dong also aims to eliminate greenhouses in areas encroaching on forest land and in the inner city. At the same time, promote urban agriculture models, landscape tourism, and circulation associated with environmental protection and sustainable development.
