As we know, the more e-commerce develops, the more negative the impact on the environment if waste, especially plastic waste, is not controlled.

It is predicted that by 2030, if Vietnam's e-commerce reaches a scale of 100 billion USD, it will leave more than 800,000 tons of plastic waste. It must be affirmed that e-commerce is one of the successes in economic development, a great effort of the Government and the business community.

However, the current situation is facing a concern that the more e-commerce develops, the more negative the impact on the environment if waste is not controlled.

It is known that online sales are very convenient, but according to a 2024 survey by the Vietnam E-commerce Association, if one billion USD is sold to the market, 7,600 tons of plastic will be left behind. And if you order fast food online and the delivery service uses plastic bags and boxes, it will leave behind 18,600 tons of plastic.

In reality, a number of sellers are not yet proactive in using other environmentally friendly materials to replace them because of the costs involved. In addition, the incentive policy system is not yet consistent, and guidelines for implementing standards and packaging processes to be environmentally friendly have not been issued. When consuming these products, people have not yet fulfilled their role and responsibility in protecting the environment.

From the above issues, in recent years, Lam Dong province has been very determined in implementing solutions to reduce plastic waste. Especially focusing on propaganda to raise awareness, replacing disposable plastic products with environmentally friendly materials, applying "Green - Clean - Beautiful" models in medical facilities, schools and calling on people and businesses to take action to reduce plastic emissions.

As a province with advantages in tourism development, the issue of plastic waste is also of great concern to the province. Accordingly, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has instructed tourism businesses in the province to implement a number of environmental protection measures, limiting the use of plastic bags, plastic straws, and disposable plastic cups.

At the same time, clean up the environment, clear sewers and drainage systems, collect and sort plastic bags and plastic items, plant flowers and trees in hotel premises and tourist attractions; preserve and protect water resources and the environment. Thereby, ensuring a green - clean - beautiful urban landscape, especially during holidays, Tet, and peak tourist seasons.

Implementing the plan to reduce plastic emissions, Lam Dong province also provides a suitable roadmap for all levels, sectors and people in the area to gradually minimize the use of products that are not beneficial to the environment.

Strive to achieve specific goals such as: 100% of tourist areas, hotels, and accommodation facilities in the province do not use hard-to-decompose plastic bags and disposable plastic products; 100% of shopping centers and supermarkets use environmentally friendly plastic bags and packaging; 100% of officials, civil servants, public employees, students, workers and people are aware of the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and human health. From there, switch to using environmentally friendly alternative products.

To solve the problem of waste in e-commerce, departments, branches and localities need to continue to strengthen propaganda work to unify viewpoints in action. That is, if we want the economy to develop quickly, we need to transform digitally and if we want the economy to develop sustainably, we need to transform green. Develop quickly but sustainably.

For the community, it is necessary to strengthen propaganda work, promote socialization in collecting waste from e-commerce for recycling. For businesses, it is necessary to pay attention to innovating packaging materials and preserving goods.

Consumers should prioritize choosing green consumer products, because the Ministry of Industry and Trade has also encouraged businesses operating in the field of e-commerce to promote consumers to choose green consumer products.
