Long Binh Commune: Agriculture makes a breakthrough after merger, creating momentum for development competition

(DTO) After the merger, Long Binh commune, Dong Thap province faced the need to reorganize production on a large scale and more closely connect. In that context, the emulation theme "Good farmers in production and business" became an important driving force, arousing the self-reliance of farmers and promoting the formation of commodity production areas.

In 2025, the Topic will continue to develop strongly, the number of participating households and achieving titles will increase, many effective production models will contribute to reorienting the agricultural development direction of the commune.

Applying new techniques to livestock farming helps many households in Long Binh commune increase productivity and reduce costs.

INNOVATION IN PRODUCTION THINKING

Administrative restructuring entails the need to reorganize agricultural production, requiring Long Binh commune to quickly find a direction that is suitable to its advantages, while overcoming the inherent limitations of small-scale production.

In that context, the emulation theme "Good farmers in production and business" was deployed as a fundamental development solution.

Right from the beginning of the year, the Party Committee and the People's Committee of the commune identified this as a key task, requiring close direction and coordination between the Farmers' Association, the Agriculture sector and mass organizations. It is worth noting the strong change in farmers' production thinking, from habitual farming to production according to processes, according to linkage models, according to market requirements.

Training and transfer of science and technology have been enhanced with many training courses on high-quality rice cultivation techniques, vegetable cultivation techniques according to standards, models of "1 must 5 reductions", "3 reductions 3 increases"... Not only stopping at imparting knowledge, these activities have significantly contributed to changing farmers' awareness of the role of technology and standards in modern agricultural production.

Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Long Binh Duong Commune, Thi Hoang Loan, shared: "The good news is that people have really changed their way of doing things. They no longer follow traditional practices, but have started to produce according to processes and market requirements. Many households have proactively registered to learn a trade and participate in training to improve their production skills, something that not all households were willing to do before."

Along with that, credit capital from the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Bank for Social Policies has become a driving force to help many households boldly invest in expanding production models. More than 1,300 households have received loans in the year, showing that the need for reproduction is growing. The management of loan capital is increasingly tight, capital is brought to the right subjects and for the right purposes, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and promoting the formation of new economic models.

The topic also recorded outstanding results when 3,319 households registered to participate, accounting for more than 80% of the total number of farming households in the commune. Of which, all were considered to have achieved the title of "Excellent Farmer - Good Businessman" at the grassroots level; 18 households achieved the title at the provincial level and 1 household achieved the title at the central level. This number does not simply reflect achievements, but shows a clear change in the thinking and working methods of Long Binh commune farmers.

EFFICIENT PRODUCTION, OPENING UP THE DIRECTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

With the production results in 2025, one of the highlights is rice production. The cultivated area is more than 9,800 hectares with an output of over 212,000 tons, exceeding the plan and increasing sharply over the same period; creating an important premise for the commune to participate in major programs such as "Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030".

Besides rice, the crop structure is shifting strongly according to market demand. “Many households are very active. They know how to compare the efficiency of each type of crop to make timely changes. Some households are bold enough to reduce rice to grow intercropping crops or invest in coconut, grapefruit, melon, etc., which have higher economic value,” added Thi Hoang Loan, Chairwoman of the Farmers’ Association of Long Binh Duong Commune.

To date, the vegetable growing area has reached 1,263 hectares, an increase of nearly 800 hectares over the same period. The expansion of specialized vegetable growing areas not only helps diversify revenue sources, but also forms concentrated commodity production areas, facilitating the issuance of growing area codes.

At the same time, coconut and grapefruit trees continue to be the main perennial crops. Many households have proactively renovated their gardens, changed varieties, and intercropped appropriately to increase productivity. The garden economic model has developed strongly in Thoi Hoa and Long Thoi hamlets, bringing in stable income, especially when households apply the VAC or VACR model to take advantage of by-products and reduce input costs.

Livestock and aquaculture also contribute to livelihood diversification. Although some livestock herds have decreased due to the impact of disease and high feed prices, goat and poultry herds have grown steadily; aquaculture alone has reached more than 8,600 tons, mainly whiteleg shrimp.

In making the most of available resources, the integrated production and business model has proven to be sustainable, low-risk, and highly profitable. With more than 50% of farming households applying this model, up to 45% of households achieving the title of Good Farmer in Production and Business originated from the integrated model. Many typical examples such as Dang Minh Sang (Thoi Hoa hamlet), Nguyen Thanh Phong, To Van Dung (Ninh Quoi hamlet) ... have become proof of the ability of farmers to rise up when integrating new business methods.

At the same time, OCOP products continue to affirm their value in the market. The commune currently has 4 products recognized as OCOP, in which processed products from Thinh Phat and Ty Ngoc establishments have increased their revenue by 5% - 10% after being certified, opening up a development direction for rural industries.

Not only stopping at the economic scope, the Emulation Theme creates a strong impact on the cultural and social life of the commune. Good farming households are often the pioneers in developing cooperative economy, playing a core role in cooperative groups and cooperatives. They are both the practitioners of new models and the ones who inspire the community to rise up together.

Mr. Huynh Van Dat (Xom Thu hamlet), a farmer who won the title of Good Farmer - Businessman at the provincial level in 2024, shared about his attachment to his family's typical farming model: “I have been raising Ben Tre chickens for about 14 years. The current herd is about 8,000, providing a fairly stable income. At many times, the price of Ben Tre chickens is higher than other types of chickens, so the output is very favorable, favored by traders and the market. Thanks to participating in the Emulation Topic, I have had access to training courses on applying science and technology organized by the Commune Farmers' Association and applied them to the care process, so the chickens are healthier, the loss rate is reduced, and productivity is stable. Many people who come to visit the model and see the effectiveness have also boldly invested in expanding in this direction."

During the year, the Commune Farmers' Association increased by 22 members, bringing the total to 3,832 members. The branches and groups were strengthened and their activities were more orderly thanks to linking the Association's activities with the emulation theme.

In the coming time, Long Binh commune aims to continue to develop the Competition Theme in a practical direction. In particular, the key task is to focus on developing modern agriculture through crop diversification, combining livestock and aquaculture and expanding vegetable growing areas. The commune promotes technology transfer, mechanization of production and building agricultural product brands.

The commune strives to increase by 10% the number of farming households achieving the title of good production and business at all levels; at the same time, strengthen the cooperative economy, "linking 4 houses" (State, scientists, businesses, farmers) and coordinate to mobilize registration of coconut acreage to issue growing area codes for export.
