In the early winter days, Ba Be Lake sheds its usual lush green appearance to put on a new coat. The ancient forests surrounding the lake simultaneously turn bright yellow and orange, creating a tranquil and charming ink painting, inviting visitors to a completely different experience.

Located in Ba Be National Park in Bac Kan province, this is one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in Vietnam, formed more than 200 million years ago. With a water surface area of about 500 hectares and a length of more than 8 km, Ba Be Lake is surrounded by majestic limestone mountains and vast primeval forests, and was once listed by UNESCO as one of the 20 special freshwater lakes in the world that need to be protected.

Ba Be Lake always has a magical peaceful beauty.

Journey on the legendary lake

The most valuable experience in Ba Be this season is going boating on the calm lake. A thin layer of mist hangs over the water, the quiet space is only left with the sound of oars gently splashing, all creating a rare peaceful winter scene.

On the journey, visitors will admire the unique limestone ecosystem with ancient trees growing precariously on cliffs tens of meters high, reaching up between the clouds and sky. The changing foliage reflects on the clear blue lake surface, creating picturesque frames.

Photographer Nguyen Quynh Anh – Roi shared her experience: “I have been to many places and taken many beautiful pictures, but the trip to Ba Be in early winter brought a very different feeling. Among the changing leaves and the misty lake, I felt an indescribable peace. What moved me most was the journey on a dugout canoe rowed by Tay women. They knew every rhythm of the water, every ravine and took me to places only the locals knew.”

The beauty of the changing seasons of Ba Be National Park

Winter is the time when the primeval forests in Ba Be National Park show off their majestic beauty. The ancient trees, tens of meters high, shed their leaves simultaneously, revealing their slender, winding branches like natural sculptures. The yellow and orange colors of the leaves stand out against the deep green of the old forest and limestone cliffs, creating an impressive color contrast.

In the middle of the lake is a cluster of small islands covered with ancient trees, the most famous of which is Widow Island associated with the legend of the lake's formation. This is a unique highlight, contributing to the wild and sacred beauty of the landscape here.

Unique indigenous culture

The beauty of Ba Be comes not only from nature but also from the cultural life of the Tay and Nung communities living along the lake. The simple, peaceful life of the people blends with the majestic natural scenery. Somewhere in the mist, visitors can hear the sound of Tinh lutes and Then singing echoing, making the space both mysterious and warm with human affection.

Exploring the lakeside villages, chatting with the locals and enjoying the specialties are also an indispensable part of the Ba Be experience.

  • Visit highlights: Don't miss Fairy Pond, Puong Cave, Dau Dang Waterfall and Widow Island.
  • Explore indigenous culture: Visit Tay villages such as Pac Ngoi and Bo Lu to learn about life and customs.
