Information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 8, in response to a reporter's question asking about Vietnam's reaction to the tense developments that broke out between Cambodia and Thailand in the border area between the two countries, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated:
"Vietnam expressed deep concern about the current tense developments between Cambodia and Thailand.
As a neighboring country and a member of ASEAN, Vietnam calls on both sides to exercise utmost restraint, not to use force, fully implement the ceasefire agreement, continue dialogue, peacefully and satisfactorily resolve disagreements on the basis of fundamental principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and in the spirit of ASEAN friendship and solidarity, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world."
According to the spokesman, Vietnam will continue to actively contribute to promoting dialogue and implementing the ceasefire agreement between the two countries to soon restore peace and cooperation on the border in the spirit of ASEAN friendship and solidarity, for the long-term interests of both sides and the region.
Cambodia and Thailand have reached a ceasefire agreement after a five-day border conflict in July.
However, tensions escalated on December 8, after both sides blamed each other for the clash a day earlier.
Both Thailand and Cambodia said their forces had been attacked. Cambodia said it had exercised restraint and not retaliated, respecting the ceasefire despite Thailand's "many provocative actions."
Thailand has accused Cambodia of firing BM-21 rockets into residential areas, using rocket-propelled grenades, artillery and drones to drop explosives on Thai bases. Bangkok later confirmed it had carried out airstrikes on Cambodian military sites in self-defense.
Fighting on December 8 killed four Cambodian civilians and one Thai soldier, according to statements from both sides.
About 380,000 Thais are taking shelter, while 1,157 Cambodian families are being evacuated from Oddar Meanchey province.
