At exactly 3:25 p.m. on December 8, the Vietnamese national flag flew in the sky above Hua Mark Indoor Stadium Square along with the flags of 10 Southeast Asian countries at the flag-raising ceremony. The Vietnamese national flag appeared near the end of the ceremony, right before the flag-raising ceremony of the host country, Thailand.

According to the tradition at major regional, continental and world sports events, the flag-raising ceremony is held to acknowledge the presence of participating countries and welcome sports delegations to the games, encouraging the competitive spirit of athletes. Vietnam participated in the 33rd SEA Games with 1,165 members, including 191 coaches; 841 athletes competing in 47 sports and disciplines. The Vietnamese Sports Delegation set a target of striving to win 91 to 110 gold medals, aiming to maintain its position among the leading groups in Southeast Asia.
