The public still remembers Le Cong Tuan Anh through his melancholic eyes in "The Bitter Taste of Love" or the romantic image of a movie star from the 1990s. But beyond that glamour, what makes him remain in the memories of his colleagues and audience is his sincerity, generosity, and the loving way of life of a talented but ill-fated artist.
Le Cong Tuan Anh after the spotlight
Critic Doan Tuan once recounted that after the success of "The Bitter Taste of Love ," Le Cong Tuan Anh suddenly rose to stardom. But when he received magazine articles about himself, he just smiled and refused to accept more, saying, "I don't like buying a mirror to admire myself in." That's enough to show that he wasn't overly concerned with fame or glamour.

Not only has Le Cong Tuan Anh made his mark through his acting roles, but he is also loved for his simple and sincere way of life.

Once, seeing his bag open with money and papers jumbled together, someone worried the money might fall out. Le Cong Tuan Anh just smiled and said, "If it all flies away, someone else will have something to be happy about." That wasn't carelessness, but rather the way of life of someone who never considered material possessions the most important thing.
People's Artist Thu Hà once shared that Lê Công Tuấn Anh often donated his performance fees to charity, helping orphans. Those who know him understand that this is also the artist's way of compensating for childhood traumas and the loneliness he always hides behind his charming exterior.
At the height of his career, when many artists began thinking about houses, cars, or a luxurious life, Le Cong Tuan Anh remained heartbreakingly simple. When he passed away, his estate consisted of almost nothing but a few personal belongings and a rented house that he hadn't even paid off yet. Director and actor Trong Hai once choked up as he said, "I've never seen a star as poor as... Le Cong (Le Cong Tuan Anh)."
But material poverty doesn't equate to emotional poverty. Those who met him remember him as an incredibly honorable man. On set, seeing a young actor being disrespectful to a senior actor, Le Cong Tuan Anh immediately stepped in to defend him: "He was filming when you weren't even born yet." For him, kindness and respect were always more important than any superficial social formalities.

But behind that carefree exterior was an artist who was extremely serious about his craft. To portray a soldier authentically, he even lived in the barracks, staying up all night talking with the soldiers just to understand how they lived and spoke. Critic Doan Tuan vividly remembers a quote from Le Cong Tuan Anh: "I only came into this life to bring joy to people." Then he sighed: "This life is so sad."
The passing of Le Cong Tuan Anh that year not only came as a great shock to the public, but also left many regretting the loss of a talent at the peak of his career. Speaking about the actor, critic Doan Tuan likened him to a line from Xuan Dieu's poem: "I am a bird from a strange mountain, singing for fun" - a beautiful, talented, yet fragile and lonely artistic soul.
At the 4th Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF IV), taking place from June 28th to July 4th, the film "The Bitter Taste of Love" by the late director Le Xuan Hoang will be reintroduced in the program "The Face of Vietnamese Cinema: 40 Years of Renewal" as a reminder of a special period in Vietnamese cinema - a time when films emerged from life, touching the hearts of audiences with genuine emotions and very relatable stories.
Not only does the film bring audiences back to a work that once left its mark on the big screen, its return also evokes memories of talented artists who have been a part of the youth of many generations of the public. And among the familiar faces of yesteryear, Le Cong Tuan Anh still stands out as a beautiful, quiet, yet never-fading memory in the hearts of Vietnamese film lovers.
