Sharing the success of the liver transplant for a professional soldier, Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Song, Director of the 108 Central Military Hospital, said that on the afternoon of June 23, the hospital received information from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center that at Hospital E, a 41-year-old patient was brain dead due to a traffic accident and his family agreed to donate organs to save a person. Immediately, the team of doctors from the 108 Central Military Hospital urgently went to Hospital E to retrieve the organs for timely transplantation to the patient.
Previously, on the afternoon of June 22, E Hospital received a male patient who suffered a traffic accident that resulted in severe brain injury, coma, and no possibility of recovery. After being diagnosed with brain death, the patient's family overcame the pain and agreed to donate organs to bring life to other patients.
Doctors at 108 Central Military Hospital are performing liver removal.
The male patient donated his heart, two livers, and two corneas to the patient. The liver removal team from the 108 Military Central Hospital performed surgery to remove two livers, of which the right lobe was coordinated to the 108 Military Central Hospital, and the left lobe was transferred to Vinmec Hospital for transplantation to a child patient with end-stage liver failure.
Due to the prior preparation for patients with transplant indications, the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, 108 Military Central Hospital quickly identified the patient for the transplant. That was a male soldier, working in the 12th Army Corps, suffering from multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma on the background of cirrhosis due to hepatitis B and was indicated for a liver transplant. Upon receiving information about the donated liver organ that was compatible with his body, the soldier could not hide his emotion at the noble and humane act of the donor's family and each member of the liver retrieval and transplant team of 108 Military Central Hospital.
The liver is transported to the hospital for transplantation to the patient.
The liver transplant team worked through the night to perform the transplant. After 4 hours of surgery, the transplant was completed, the patient was fully conscious and transferred to the Department of Surgical Resuscitation and Organ Transplantation for further monitoring and treatment.
At the same time, the donated heart was coordinated to Viet Duc Hospital for transplantation to heart failure patients, and the cornea was coordinated to the Central Eye Hospital for transplantation to bring light to blind patients.
"For us, brain-dead organ donors not only leave this life but also leave behind a part of their body to continue living and contributing in another person's body. We would like to express our gratitude for this noble gesture of the donor and his family," said the Director of 108 Military Central Hospital.
