Recently, Saigon Da Lat Eye Hospital (Lam Dong province) has been continuously receiving many cases of eye injuries caused by coffee tree branches hitting patients during harvesting.

Within a short period, the hospital recorded at least four cases with the same cause, but varying degrees of damage, from mild keratitis to corneal ulcers suspected to be fungal and conjunctival tears requiring surgery.

The patient's eye condition involves corneal ulceration following trauma.

One typical case is patient Pang T. Y K. The patient was hit in the eye by a coffee branch while working but did not go to the hospital early, instead monitoring the eye at home despite prolonged pain and redness.

Upon admission, the condition had worsened, and the patient was diagnosed with suspected fungal corneal ulceration. This is a dangerous complication, often requiring prolonged treatment and carrying the risk of corneal scarring, severely affecting vision if not properly managed.

In contrast, patient Vinh PL suffered a similar accident but proactively went to the hospital immediately after the injury. Upon examination, the doctor noted that the patient had keratitis, and he was treated with local medication and closely monitored. Thanks to timely treatment, his condition quickly improved, minimizing the risk of complications.

Another case that received timely emergency treatment was patient Nguyen VL (born in 1992, residing in Tan Ha commune, Lam Ha district). While harvesting coffee, the patient was struck forcefully in the right eye by a tree branch that snapped back, causing intense pain and bleeding. Family members quickly took the patient to Saigon Da Lat Eye Hospital for emergency treatment.

Upon examination, the doctor determined that the patient had corneal abrasions and extensive conjunctival tears, requiring surgery to repair the conjunctiva and medication to control bleeding and prevent infection.

According to Dr. Tran Thi Khanh Linh, Deputy Director of Professional Affairs at Saigon Da Lat Eye Hospital, eye injuries caused by tree branches during gardening and coffee harvesting not only cause mechanical damage but also pose a risk of fungal and bacterial infections from the soil and plants. Early medical attention and proper treatment are crucial in preserving vision and preventing complications.

Doctors advise people to wear protective eyewear when working outdoors. If you experience pain, irritation, redness, tearing, or bleeding in your eyes, absolutely do not rub your eyes, do not attempt to remove foreign objects, or use eye drops without consulting a doctor.

People should gently rinse their eyes with saline solution and promptly go to an ophthalmology clinic if they notice any unusual symptoms for timely examination and treatment.
