Set on the International Space Station, "Orbital" follows six astronauts (two men, four women) from Japan, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy, as they make a 24-hour flight around the Earth.
On November 12, British writer Samantha Harvey won the prestigious Booker Prize for her science fiction novel “Orbital.”
Set on the International Space Station, "Orbital" follows six astronauts (two men, four women) from Japan, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy as they orbit Earth for 24 hours, reflecting on their home planet and touching on themes such as loss, longing and the climate crisis.
“Orbital” is Harvey's fifth novel, and is notable for being the first Booker Prize-winning book set in space.
At just 136 pages, it is the second short novel to win the award, and Harvey is only the third woman to win the prestigious award.
Fifteen years ago, Harvey's debut work "The Wilderness" was also nominated for the Booker Prize.
The Booker Prize is awarded annually to literary works in English and is considered a springboard to help new authors gain wider recognition./.
