Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training ( Ministry of Health ), assessed that the Advanced Training Center for Diagnostic Imaging (AIEC) under the Institute of Health Sciences - VinUni University is the first center in Vietnam and in the region to implement an international quality diagnostic imaging training model, serving both research work and improving the practical capacity of clinical doctors.
On May 20, the Advanced Medical Imaging Center (AIEC) under the Institute of Health Sciences - VinUni University was officially opened and opened its first CME (continuing medical education) course.
Enhancing diagnostic imaging doctors in Vietnam
As a systematic collaboration between a medical school and a practice hospital, Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VinUni University, said that the center will be a place to bring practical courses with different values, not only helping to improve the capacity of medical staff but also contributing to the change in the quality of diagnostic imaging in Vietnam.
AIEC Center is built according to international standards thanks to the combination of 3 parties: Hospital (Vinmec Healthcare System) - school (VinUni University) - world-leading medical experts/equipment (GE Healthcare Vietnam).
The close combination has created an advanced training model on the most advanced diagnostic imaging, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods that are heavy on theory, light on practice, and lack systematic data.
By taking courses at the center, students will have access to hardware and software systems that ensure students have the same experience as in a hospital. Students will also be able to read images in original information format (DICOM), and practice image processing with PACS tools (picture archiving and communication system).
At the same time, the data used in the course is organized in a structured way, helping learners grasp the problem comprehensively, systematically and completely on a specific topic. Theoretical lectures are closely linked to practice, helping learners grasp the problem firmly to effectively handle real-life situations in diagnosis and treatment later.

Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Van Giang (Head of the Department of Radiology, VinUni University and Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology, Vinmec Healthcare System) said that reality requires doctors to continuously update their knowledge and practice to optimize treatment effectiveness. The courses at AIEC Center will help experienced doctors continue to update new knowledge combined with practice on modern, highly practical equipment.
“The model at the center is close to the world's training methods. Students will be exposed to diagnosis, pathology, etc., from basic theory to practice. We invite foreign lecturers specializing in the training field so that after completing the course, students can practice in that field of knowledge,” said Dr. Giang.
In particular, GE Healthcare will invite to Vietnam leading experts with experience in specialized fields from major hospitals around the world in the UK, USA, Australia, etc. to teach directly to students, and at the same time participate in advanced training for lecturers of Vinmec and VinUniversity.

This is a form of technology transfer; lecturers of Vinmec and VinUniversity will have access to professional processes and international teaching standards, thereby proactively implementing CME/CPD courses later, with expected monthly enrollment.
Mr. Pham Hong Son, General Director of GE HealthCare Vietnam, said that the continuous innovation of the medical technology industry requires a team of experts and medical staff with high expertise and continuous learning. Therefore, AIEC will help improve the quality of medical human resources, bringing great opportunities for Vietnam's healthcare sector in the future.
According to the cooperation plan between the three parties, the advanced diagnostic imaging courses are expected to train about 200-300 domestic and international students each year. After the first course on musculoskeletal magnetic resonance, the center will also organize courses related to the fields of oncology, cardiology, etc.

Immediately after completing the course, students will be awarded a certificate of continuing education (CME) in diagnostic imaging and will be able to practice advanced skills proficiently to apply in daily practical work.
The establishment of AIEC marks an important milestone for VinUni's strategy of developing academic capacity in the field of smart health. The AIEC model is a typical model of innovation in training at VinUni: the program follows international standards, has connections with global experts, uses big data and is highly practical.

Approaching advanced training models in the world
Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Van Giang said that the first CME course on musculoskeletal magnetic resonance attracted a large number of domestic and international students to register. However, to ensure the quality of teaching and practice, each course will only enroll a maximum of 30 students.
In addition to the field of diagnostic imaging, Vinmec will also cooperate with the Institute of Health Sciences - VinUni University in a long-term continuous training strategy in emergency, resuscitation, surgery... towards comprehensively improving the quality of the Vietnamese medical industry.
Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang. |
Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang assessed that the AIEC training center model is an advanced training model, approaching the world. This model not only serves the training in the field of diagnostic imaging, but also provides diagnosis and treatment directions for doctors in many specialties.
“We consider this an advanced model, serving both research and training, but also very practical and specialized to improve the practical capacity of clinical doctors. This is a common direction for doctor training in the world. Training courses at VinUni always have many foreign doctors registering to participate,” said Dr. Quang.
According to Mr. Quang, recently, the Ministry of Health has also innovated training in the direction of providing image data and symptoms so that students can make appropriate diagnoses. However, the innovation of the Ministry of Health is currently only in theory, and the AIEC Center is the pioneer in implementing the model to synthesize everything into a simulation training model.
“We see this as a suitable direction, up to date with the world, helping doctors practice capacity, providing the best service to the people. The Ministry of Health encourages this development. We look forward to the cooperation of sponsors and VinGroup to further develop this model in the future,” Mr. Quang expressed.

He also emphasized that, in the immediate future, the Institute of Health Sciences – VinUni University will operate training courses to grant certificates to radiologists or some other specialties. However, the Ministry of Health's viewpoint is that VinUni hopes to train a team of specialized doctors in a sustainable and long-term manner.
Therefore, the Ministry of Health encourages VinUni to train resident physicians in diagnostic imaging based mainly on the practical capacity of the AIEC Center, helping doctors to have complete capacity in the future, moving towards training to grant degrees.
