Brick and tile making village in Ong Chuong Island

Việt NamViệt Nam01/08/2024

The brick and tile making village in Cho Moi, An Giang, has existed since the 1950s, thanks to the high-quality alluvial soil in the three communes of Long Giang, Nhon My, and My Hoi Dong. Since 2016, the village has received investment capital, technology, and production process support, leading to strong development in brick and tile production. The lives of the people here have become stable, and the brick and tile products are popular and widely used throughout the country. Vietnam.vn takes you on a journey to visit a traditional brick and tile making village through the photo series "Brick and Tile Making Village in Cu Lao Ong Chuong" by author Le Huu Nghia. The author submitted this photo series to the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest, organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications .
Chợ Mới District is blessed by nature as an island situated between two major rivers, the Tiền and Hậu rivers. Besides its mild climate and fertile soil, the district also has abundant clay resources suitable for the production of various types of bricks and tiles. Therefore, this island region has hundreds of traditional brick kilns operating day and night, providing employment for thousands of workers.
Traveling along National Highway 1 from Long Xuyen to Chau Doc, passing through Binh My commune, Chau Phu district, An Giang province, one will easily notice the roadside piles of various types of bricks, hollow bricks, roof tiles, and brick roofs protruding from people's houses – this is a brick and tile making village.

As a traditional craft, it has contributed significantly to providing employment for local workers. However, a plan is needed to re-plan the raw material extraction areas and kiln production areas to ensure environmental hygiene and establish appropriate management mechanisms, avoiding unhealthy competition that reduces brick quality, damages customer reputation, and ultimately harms the long-standing traditional craft village. In 2024, the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest will continue to be organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists on the website.   https://happy.vietnam.vn is open to all Vietnamese citizens and foreigners aged 15 and above. The competition aims to honor individuals and groups with positive informational products that make practical contributions to promoting a beautiful image of Vietnam to the world . Through this, it helps people at home, overseas Vietnamese, and international friends access authentic images of Vietnam, its people, its achievements in ensuring human rights, and towards a happy Vietnam. Each competition category (photos and videos) has the following prizes and prize values: – 1 Gold Medal: 70,000,000 VND – 2 Silver Medals: 20,000,000 VND – 3 Bronze Medals: 10,000,000 VND – 10 Consolation Prizes: 5,000,000 VND – 1 Most Voted entry: 5,000,000 VND.
