In recent days, while our entire Party, people and army have organized many practical activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), on social networks, hostile and reactionary forces and some ill-intentioned people have still sought to distort the nature and righteousness of the resistance war against French colonialism, the peak of which was the Dien Bien Phu Victory.
Historical distortions
They argued that “it was only a war between two belligerent parties, not a just war to protect independence and freedom”; “the decisive factor was that Vietnam relied on foreign aid, but soldiers and laborers could not “make it happen””! These were arguments aimed at attacking and distorting the nature and justice of the resistance war against French colonialism; creating doubts among the masses about the great historical victory of the nation; lowering the prestige and leadership role of the Party, denying the sacrifices and losses in the resistance war against French colonialism of our army and people.
Even closer to the great national holiday, more and more clips and videos are shared on social networks; many newspapers of hostile forces publish information about the Dien Bien Phu Victory of the Vietnamese people, distorting and falsifying that: "The Dien Bien Phu Victory is not associated with the leadership of the Vietnam Workers' Party and President Ho Chi Minh"; "The Dien Bien Phu Victory was achieved because the French colonialists made strategic mistakes"; "Dien Bien Phu is a product of communism's love of revolutionary violence"...
They argue that the French colonialists invaded Vietnam to “civilize”; the Dien Bien Phu event ended “civilization”. On the other hand, there are those who have illusions about the compassion of colonialism and imperialism when they think that there is no need to launch a war, just wait until the colonialists finish civilizing and then return the country’s sovereignty!
The sinister and dangerous nature of the plots and sabotage methods of some bad elements is to target young people, especially those who lack historical knowledge, to sow skepticism and lack of faith in the legitimacy and justice of the Dien Bien Phu Victory. The deception of the nature of the war is very harmful because through it, they seek to lead to vague and distorted perceptions, causing some gullible and gullible people to lose their vigilance and not perceive the true nature of the resistance war against colonialism, including the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.
In addition to focusing on distorting the nature and just nature of our people's resistance war against French colonialism, hostile and reactionary forces also accused Vietnam of being "warlike", thereby denying the just resistance war to protect our nation's independence and freedom. Some articles deny the contributions of the Party, of President Ho Chi Minh and the talented command role of General Vo Nguyen Giap; seek to deny the heroic sacrifices of heroes To Vinh Dien, Phan Dinh Giot, Be Van Dan... The purpose of hostile and reactionary forces is to distract and shake the Vietnamese people's ideology; to sow skepticism about the leadership of the Party, the art of Vietnamese military affairs and the development of the revolutionary armed forces.
Hostile forces, exiled reactionary organizations and some opposition groups have taken advantage of the drought and saltwater intrusion situation in the southern provinces in recent times to distort: "Instead of organizing a big event wasting money, why not use that money to provide water to save the people"; "People's tax money, instead of bringing water to the people, is used to show off its strength"; "The Army and Police forces come from the people but leave people to die of thirst"; "The Party only cares about showing off its power and prestige without caring about the hungry and thirsty people"...
The subjects even incorporated content that incites, discriminates, and discriminates against regions, claiming that Southerners only help Southerners, and then demand to redistribute “Northern Vietnam”, “Southern Vietnam”… From there, they claim that people must stand up to fight to overthrow the current regime in Vietnam to have the opportunity to live in a free, democratic regime, to have a prosperous, happy life, and not have to worry about hunger, poverty, natural disasters, floods and storms!
With the above-mentioned distortions and accusations, hostile forces, reactionary organizations in exile and some opposing subjects have deliberately "twisted", inserted and released distorted and untrue information in order to confuse the nature, distort the meaning, stature, and historical value of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, distort the Vietnamese military art, the heroic feats and sacrifices of our army and people; incite and divide the great national unity bloc, deny the history of the nation, the history of the Party, and the history of the revolutionary armed forces.
From the thousand-year tradition of building and defending the nation to the world-famous victory
From March 13 to May 7, 1954, our army and people, under the leadership of the Party, headed by President Ho Chi Minh, carried out the decisive strategic battle of Dien Bien Phu. Overcoming enemy bombs and bullets, overcoming harsh terrain and weather conditions, thousands of tons of food, provisions, gasoline, weapons and ammunition were transported by the army and people of the whole country to the Dien Bien Phu front for the troops by rudimentary means to contribute to the final victory. That miracle was beyond the thinking of the forces that used the power of weapons as the basis for resolving the war and did not understand the consensus and wholehearted support of the entire nation.
Along with the Bach Dang Victory (938) of Ngo Quyen, the Chi Lang - Xuong Giang Victory (1427) of Le Loi - Nguyen Trai, the Ngoc Hoi - Dong Da Victory of Quang Trung (1789), the Dien Bien Phu Victory is an immortal epic, one of the glorious victories in the history of thousands of years of struggle against foreign invaders to build and defend the country of the Vietnamese people. It is a victory of the aspiration for peace, independence, freedom, of the will of self-reliance and self-strengthening; a victory of the national liberation movement, people's democracy in the world and of the conscience of the times.
The Dien Bien Phu victory dealt a decisive blow, ending nearly 100 years of Vietnam being a French colony, forcing the French Government to sign the Geneva Agreement, ending the war in Indochina, opening a new page for the Vietnamese revolution; at the same time, it was an important event signaling the collapse of old colonialism worldwide. President Ho Chi Minh once affirmed: "The Dien Bien Phu victory is like a golden milestone in history".
Internationally, in the long and arduous resistance war, the Vietnamese people received strong support and valuable assistance from the fraternal socialist countries, and the people of oppressed nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, especially the fighting alliance between the three Indochinese countries and the struggle movement of progressive peoples in the world, including the progressive people of France. The Dien Bien Phu campaign had a great significance and went down in human history, because this was the first time the army of a former colony in Asia defeated the modern and sophisticated army of a European power, supported by the US empire in a major military campaign.
The outcome of this campaign was considered an unexpected disaster for the French colonialists and also a heavy blow to the Western world, defeating France's plot to maintain colonial rule in Indochina. The victory contributed greatly to the movement for peace and human progress; urging and encouraging colonial countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to rise up to liberate themselves and escape the yoke of colonialism and imperialism.
According to President Ho Chi Minh, any history of colonial invasion is written from beginning to end with the blood of the natives. That is not a “civilization” but only uses it as a cover to carry out the ambition of oppression and enslavement. In the “Declaration of Independence” that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, President Ho Chi Minh condemned the colonial regime: “Economically, they exploited our people to the bone, making them poor and deprived, our country devastated and desolate. They robbed us of our land, forests, mines, raw materials… They imposed hundreds of unreasonable taxes, making our people, especially farmers and traders, destitute. They did not allow our capitalists to become rich. They exploited our workers in an extremely cruel way”… Therefore, it cannot be called “civilization” when turning an independent, sovereign nation into a colonial, semi-feudal state. Those who claim that the French invasion of Vietnam was "civilizing" and that the Dien Bien Phu victory was the end of "civilizing" are distorting the truth and distorting history.
70 years have passed, but the historical significance and lessons of the Dien Bien Phu Victory still resonate, adding strength and motivation to the entire Party, people and army on the path of innovation, integration and development, building and defending the Fatherland. In the hearts of every Vietnamese person in general and today's young generation in particular, there is a surge of pride and honor in the glorious feats and indomitable spirit of our ancestors, which has a strong spreading power, becoming one of the great spiritual motivations that helps today's young generation have more support to actively train and strive to build the homeland and the country to become increasingly prosperous.
Today, Vietnam and France have also cultivated a strategic partnership, cooperating and developing together. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, French Minister of the Army Sébastien Lecornu and the Secretary of State in charge of Veterans and War Memory visited Vietnam and attended the Commemoration Ceremony in Dien Bien Phu, which demonstrated the spirit of "closing the past, looking towards the future", cooperating together for the development of the two countries and peoples.
French Ambassador to Hanoi Olivier Brochet affirmed that France highly values the position and role of Vietnam and wishes to continue promoting the strategic partnership between the two countries to develop more deeply and comprehensively in the coming time. Therefore, the organization of the celebration is absolutely not to divide the Vietnam - France relationship as the deceitful tones, plots and evil tricks of some bad elements have spread.
