According to Daum , on August 23rd, at the press conference announcing the second season of the "Pachinko" series on Apple TV+, actor Lee Min Ho shared his views on the controversial character Han-su that he plays.
"Pachinko" is an American drama television series written by Soo Hugh based on the novel by Min Jin Lee, which premiered in March 2022 on Apple TV+.
The film tells the story of four generations of a Korean family, spanning the period from 1915 to 1989, set in three countries: Korea, Japan, and the United States.
"Pachinko" conveys content and messages about love, war, and the fate of Korean immigrants in Japan during the 19th century.
In the film, Han-su, played by Lee Min Ho, is a Korean man who becomes wealthy by marrying the daughter of a yakuza (traditional Japanese criminals).
However, he falls in love with Sun-ja (played by Kim Min Ha) and proposes that she live with him without revealing his true marital status.
When asked by reporters about the controversial nature of his character Han-su, Lee Min Ho defended his character. He described Han-su as a "real-life character" and explained that the character's actions and personality reflect the times and circumstances.
"I don't think Han-su is a trashy character. In a modern context, he might be judged more harshly, but that was a different era with different moral values," the actor explained.
Lee Min Ho also shared that in season 2, he wanted to portray Han-su's desires and emotions in greater depth, which would also help viewers better understand the character's motivations and psychology.
"Pachinko" Part 2 is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on August 23rd.
Part 1 of the film garnered significant attention, receiving nominations and wins at 11 prestigious international awards ceremonies, including the Peabody Awards, the American Film Institute Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the Gotham Awards.
