Lenovo has long been known for groundbreaking laptop designs such as the dual-screen Yoga Book 9, the foldable OLED ThinkPad X1 Fold, and most recently the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable with an extendable OLED display.

Now, another laptop screen design shows Lenovo’s unrivaled creativity. They unveiled a unique laptop with a vertically rotating screen called Project Pivo at IFA in September.

90 degree rotating screen, easy to detach

Based on the leaked images, Project Pivo has a display that can rotate 90 degrees into portrait mode with a simple gesture. The display appears to be attached to the body with magnets and connected via contacts on the back to transfer power and data.

This layout is not only flexible, but also suitable for tasks such as reading long documents, word processing, or programming.

Although Project Pivo is just a concept at the moment, it is possible that it will be put into production in the future. Previously, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable model was also introduced as a concept before officially hitting the shelves about a year later.

This makes the technology world expect Lenovo to turn Project Pivo into the next commercial product, further expanding the company's flexible and innovative laptop portfolio.

With Project Pivo, Lenovo continues to show its ambition to redefine the user experience on laptops, combining mobility, convenience and form innovation, something that few technology companies dare to pursue at the present time.

The laptop is said to be marketed as the VertiFlex. Lenovo is apparently inspired by LG’s Wing smartphone, which has a similar rotating screen mechanism. However, Lenovo’s implementation of the idea takes it to a whole new level for laptops.

The LG Wing smartphone with a similar design language inspired the Pivo.

The rotating display mechanism opens up new possibilities for content consumption and productivity workflows. The vertical view is especially useful for reading long documents, browsing social media feeds, and watching vertical video content, which is increasingly popular across many platforms.

Content creators working with video editing software may benefit from the extra screen space when arranging multiple timelines, although the practical benefits have yet to be fully demonstrated.

Industry sources say Project Pivo will make its public debut at the upcoming IFA 2025 conference in Berlin, scheduled to take place from September 5 to 9, 2025.

The device is expected to arrive alongside a slew of new ThinkPad models, including refreshed P-series workstations and an updated X9 Aura Edition laptop with a variety of new color variants.

The timing fits with Lenovo's strategy of using major tech conferences to showcase innovative concepts before determining commercial viability.
