According to records, Troy was continuously inhabited from the Early Bronze Age (around 3000 BC to 2200 BC). It existed for about 4,000 years until two major earthquakes destroyed Troy in 1300. As a result, the once-prosperous city fell into decline. Photo: Shutterstock.

Further excavations by experts in the following years uncovered strata or layers of different settlements that, over time, formed a 20m high mound. These layers are marked from Troy I to Troy IX. Photo: skaman306/Getty Images.

So far, experts have identified nine cities and 46 settlement levels, suggesting that many civilizations lived in Hisarlik in addition to Troy. Photo: Bettmann / Getty Images.

The size of Troy remains a matter of debate. According to archaeologist Manfred Korfmann, who directs excavations at Hisarlık, a “lower city” with a large residential area outside the citadel would have brought its total area to around 30 hectares. Photo: GVictoria /Adobe Stock.
