Christie's auction house announced that the painting titled California, measuring nearly 2 meters high and 4 meters wide, by French artist Yves Klein, was bought by a private collector for 21 million USD on October 23. This is the highest price for a painting by Klein sold in France.

He painted California in early 1961, just before his first and last trip to the United States to hold exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles.
Klein, who died in 1962 at the age of 34, patented a special blue called International Klein Blue (IKB) which he created from a mixture of synthetic resin, matte paint and pigment.
According to Christie's, the shades of blue in all of Klein's works are different, giving a sense of "completely different atmosphere and nature." In California , he attached small pebbles to the surface of the painting, making people think of the seabed under the deep blue ocean.
This is not the first time Klein’s work has fetched a high price. In 2013, a flower-shaped piece made of blue IKB foam attached to a metal body and a stone base sold for $22 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
