Initially, the AVC Nations Cup 2025 had 12 participating teams. However, at the last minute, the Kazakhstan team had to withdraw due to special reasons.

Accordingly, to reach Bahrain, their flights must pass through Iranian airspace, which is potentially dangerous due to the conflict with Israel. Unable to find a better way to arrive in Bahrain on time, the Kazakhstan Volleyball Federation withdrew.

This leaves the tournament with 11 teams, divided into four groups. Group A includes hosts Bahrain, Indonesia and Thailand. Group B, after losing Kazakhstan, has only two teams left: Qatar and Australia. Group C includes Pakistan, Chinese Taipei and the Philippines. Finally, Group D includes South Korea, Vietnam and New Zealand.

The first and second teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, while the third-placed teams will participate in the qualifying matches from 9 to 11.

In Group B, with only two teams left, Australia and Qatar have already secured their place in the quarterfinals. Their only match in this group will only determine the first and second place in the group.

The predecessor of the AVC Nations Cup is the AVC Challenge Cup, with Qatar winning the championship in 2024. As for Vietnam, the best result is reaching the semi-finals, then finishing 4th overall in 2023.

Last year in this tournament, coach Tran Dinh Tien's team also left a strong impression when they were the only Southeast Asian team to make it to the quarterfinals. After that, the team unfortunately lost to Pakistan due to a controversial situation from the referee.

In the end, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team ranked 6th in the tournament, above other Southeast Asian teams such as Thailand (9th), Philippines (10th) and Indonesia (11th).

This year, with the AVC Nations Cup group stage, the team has a good chance of reaching the quarterfinals in theory.

In Group D, Korea is a strong opponent and will almost certainly top the group. Coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team will place their hopes on the match against New Zealand, a team that has not yet been ranked in the world rankings.

* The schedule of the 2025 AVC Nations Cup Men's Volleyball Tournament may change depending on the tournament organizer.
