Aiming for export
Mr. Pham Van Thao, a young farmer in Hamlet 1, Gia Hiep Commune, is taking care of his durian garden for the 7th year. With 5 sao of durian and 100 trees, he harvested 17 tons in the 2024 crop year and this year, he hopes to harvest 20 tons. "Gia Hiep durian has the characteristic of ripening late, when other places have almost harvested, Gia Hiep area has just started to round the fruit," Mr. Thao shared. However, with a small area and low output like his family's, it is very difficult to be proactive in selling it on the market, making him worried about the value of the durian garden.
“Because my family’s area is not large, I registered to join Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative. Joining the cooperative, building a growing area code with the people in the area, my family’s durian will be easier to export. Thanks to the collective, the small durian output of each household will be included in the growing area code, maintaining a stable output for durian,” Mr. Pham Van Thao shared.
Mr. Nguyen Danh Can - Director of Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative informed: "Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative is a collective of residents growing durian and macadamia in Gia Hiep and Bao Thuan areas. We join hands with the goal of bringing durian to foreign markets". According to Mr. Can, the Cooperative was established in 2018 with 20 official members and 20 associate members. The main products of the Cooperative are durian, coffee, bananas as well as some households raising livestock such as cows, quails, egg-laying chickens... "The members of the Cooperative are very diverse, mainly farmers and some businesses that play a role in consuming products. Among them, there is Mai Thao Company, a famous processing unit in the area", Mr. Nguyen Danh Can informed.
Build growing area code
“Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative has actively built growing area codes for durian areas, ensuring that members' durians meet the standards to participate in the export playground,” Mr. Nguyen Danh Can informed. Accordingly, by the end of 2024, the Cooperative had built 2 growing area codes with an area of 41 hectares. Thereby, farmers, with the technical support of agricultural staff, remind each other to comply with sustainable farming processes, ensuring that durians do not contain pesticide residues as well as harmful microorganisms according to the standards of partners.
“Gia Hiep durian has the characteristic of ripening late, so we believe that when participating in the export market as well as domestic supply, Tan Hiep Phat durian has many opportunities to compete. To ensure the quality of the fruit as well as maintain the vitality of the durian tree, the members of the cooperative have used a large amount of organic fertilizer,” Mr. Nguyen Danh Can informed. Even Mr. Can’s family also raises a quail farm with 50,000 birds. Mr. Can collects a huge amount of manure and composts it with a very strict process. “The quail manure is composted for 12 months, with Trichoderma yeast as well as by-products such as lime and molasses. We always ensure that the manure is well-composted and free of fungi to protect the tree’s roots,” Mr. Can said.
Not only stopping at durian trees, the cooperative's macadamia trees are being consumed by the associated members. Currently, Mr. Tran Anh Tu (Mai Thao Co., Ltd.) is the Deputy Director of Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative. Mai Thao Company purchases macadamia nuts from members for processing, supplying the domestic market as well as for export. This is the strength of Tan Hiep Phat Cooperative, when the members of the cooperative form a close link in production - consumption of products. In the 2025 crop, Tan Hiep Phat is ready for the first export of 200 tons of fresh durian, paving the way for a sustainable direction for highland durian.
