A brand of chicken and quail eggs from Don Duong district, which has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, has brought great joy to the farmers. This is a success of a collaboration between businesses and livestock farmers.
• BUSINESS INVESTMENT - FARMERS PROVIDING CARE
Mr. Vu Ngoc Quoc Duy, a farmer from Pro Kinh Te village, Quang Lap commune, is tending to his flock of egg-laying quail. Mr. Duy explained that this quail farm is built on his family's land, but he only raises them under a contract farming arrangement. The company provides everything from quail chicks, feed, and medicine to technical advice; the farmers only need to care for and harvest the quail. “My family is raising quails under contract for Nguyen Ba Clean Egg Farm, also in Quang Lap commune. Nguyen Ba Farm invests in everything for the farmers; my family only needs to care for the birds, and the company buys back 100% of the quail eggs. The advantage of contract farming for a company is that farmers don't need to invest much capital, are paid based on egg production, and have additional income from quail manure,” Mr. Duy explained.
According to Mr. Duy, quail chicks are brought home and raised for another 3 weeks before they start laying eggs. After 5 months, the quail reach their highest egg-laying rate, over 95%, then gradually decrease, and after 12-14 months, the flock is culled to make way for a new one. “The price of quail eggs fluctuates, sometimes just breaking even. However, my family's quail farm produces a large amount of manure, which we use both in our own garden and supply to surrounding farmers. The farm can earn 60 million VND per month from quail manure, a very stable source of income for my family,” Mr. Duy explained.
After four years of collaborating with Nguyen Ba's facility under a business-investor-farmer contract farming model, Mr. Duy is considering partnering with the company to invest in seeds, feed, medicine, and care, while the company provides technical support and guarantees product purchase. According to Mr. Duy, with four years of experience, he is confident in achieving high yields. Several farmers currently partnering with Nguyen Ba's facility have shifted from contract farming to a contract farming model with guaranteed product purchase. This model provides higher income for farmers. Currently, Mr. Duy has two quail farms. He plans to open another quail farm soon, partnering with Nguyen Ba's egg production facility to produce eggs.
• OCOP Clean Eggs
Mr. Pham Tin, owner of the Nguyen Ba clean egg facility in Quang Lap commune, Don Duong district, is a local farmer who previously worked as a driver, transporting various goods, including eggs. Recognizing the potential of eggs and having some information about market demand, he boldly opened a family farm raising chickens and quail for egg production. “Quail and chicken eggs are very familiar foods in family meals. If my family only produced eggs for our own consumption, we could only supply on a small scale. Seeing the market demand and finding a market outlet, I thought about investing in farmers around me to expand the scale of raising chickens and quail for eggs,” Mr. Tin stated. Raising chickens and quail for eggs in the Quang Lap area is very suitable due to the stable climate and minimal temperature fluctuations. However, Mr. Tin also provides thorough advice and guidance on breeding techniques to farmers, helping them to proactively care for their chickens and quail.
Currently, Nguyen Ba's facility is linked with 6 quail farms and 5 chicken farms, collecting 300 chicken egg trees (90,000 eggs) and 400,000 quail eggs per day. “Farmers in Quang Lap are used to growing vegetables, so when I encouraged them to raise quail and chickens for eggs, many households were hesitant. Therefore, I implemented a model where the enterprise invests and the farmers take care of the crops. But gradually, the farmers realized that the model of farmer investment and enterprise product purchase is more beneficial. Currently, two households have switched to self-investment, and Nguyen Ba will purchase all the eggs,” Mr. Tin explained.
According to Mr. Tin, since 2020, the close cooperation between Nguyen Ba's facility and local farmers has provided a stable supply of eggs, enabling the facility to expand its distribution system. With the support of Quang Lap commune, Nguyen Ba's facility has developed OCOP (One Commune One Product) eggs to distribute to clean food stores and supermarkets. "Linking with farmers and ensuring their profits is a sustainable approach to ensuring stable agricultural production and helping businesses develop sound distribution plans. As a native of Quang Lap, I am very proud to have built a strong partnership with the farmers and neighbors around my own family," Mr. Pham Tin shared.
According to Mr. Hoang Ngoc Bao Son, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Lap commune, Nguyen Ba's clean chicken eggs are a new OCOP product of Don Duong district. Established in 2020, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nguyen Ba has built a stable link with over 10 farming households in the area, ensuring good income for farmers. The facility is expanding its farms in partnership with businesses to increase the supply of clean eggs to the market, providing an effective farming direction for farmers.
