The landslide occurred at approximately 3:00 AM local time on May 24th in the village of Kaokalam in Enga province, about 600km north of the capital, Port Mosby. Broadcasting Australia and local media outlets estimate that more than 100 people have died. Local media fear the death toll could be higher as the landslide occurred while residents were asleep.

Regional media reported that the landslide affected operations at the Porgera gold mine, operated by Barrick Gold. Numerous images on social media showed local residents attempting to pull the bodies of victims buried under rubble and fallen trees, but indicated that locating the bodies was difficult. A road leading to the town of Porgera was also blocked due to landslides.
Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister , James Marape, said he had not yet been fully informed of the situation but assured that relevant agencies were working to rescue people. Rescue operations are currently underway to free those trapped under buried houses or under rubble.
