iPhone 18 design rumors revealed with unexpected changes

Rumors about the iPhone 18 suggest a surprising change in the display.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models, expected to launch in 2026, are rumored to feature a Face ID sensor placed underneath the display, according to a report from The Information.

This information comes just after previous reports suggesting Apple may be considering moving to releasing major iPhone updates twice a year, potentially starting as early as next year.

The latest information suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max may ditch the pill-shaped Dynamic Island currently used for the camera and Face ID hardware.

Instead, these models may just have a small circular hole in the top left corner for the front camera.

All the sensors needed for Face ID will work from underneath the display. This potential change is in line with previous predictions from display industry analyst Ross Young, who said that under-display Face ID would appear on the iPhone Pro in 2026.

Moving Face ID technology below the display allows for a more uninterrupted display area, bringing Apple closer to achieving a truly edge-to-edge viewing experience.

However, the report doesn't include how the software will work after Dynamic Island is "shrinking." It's unclear whether Apple will tweak the software to work around the single camera hole or if the feature will be completely replaced by the time the iPhone 18 series launches.

In the past, Apple has gradually reduced the size of the display notches, moving from the original notch introduced on the iPhone X to the Dynamic Island on recent models. Achieving Face ID under the display would be a significant step forward in this design process.

While some Android manufacturers, like Samsung, have implemented under-screen cameras on certain devices, it's still not perfect as it still affects photo quality, as well as display capabilities.

Integrating the complex sensors required for Apple's secure Face ID system without compromising performance or display quality is a significant technical challenge, and if Apple succeeds, it will mark a technological breakthrough that many "big guys" have yet to truly perfect.

Compared to the rumored changes for the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, which seem to be primarily aimed at the back of the device, the potential change with the iPhone 18 Pro seems to be solely related to the display.
