Benefits of lemon water for the kidneys

VnExpressVnExpress30/12/2023

Lemon water provides vitamin C and hydration, reduces the risk of kidney stones, and helps maintain a healthy weight.

Although this drink doesn't provide many nutrients, it can offer numerous health benefits due to its low calorie and sugar content, and increased vitamin C levels. Below are the effects of lemon water on the kidneys.

Provide water to the body.

The body's organs need water to function properly, provide nutrients to cells, and regulate body temperature. Water also enhances hydration, helping to prevent kidney stone formation and protect against cell damage.

Reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Lemons contain citrate (nitrate), which helps prevent calcium buildup and the formation of kidney stones. On average, the juice of 1 kg of lemons contains about 55.6 g of citrate, while other citrus fruits have lower levels.

A 2014 study by Case Western Reserve University in the US showed that citrate prevents stone formation through two mechanisms. It binds to calcium in urine to reduce saturation. Citrate is also able to bind to calcium oxalate crystals and prevent their growth.

Prevent urinary tract infections.

Drinking lemon water is a way to eliminate bacteria in the urinary tract, preventing infections. Many studies have also shown that many urinary tract infections can be reduced by drinking plenty of water. Higher acidic liquids like lemon water may be more effective in treating urinary tract infections.

Weight loss support

Weight loss is a proactive measure to prevent kidney stones because uric acid levels are often elevated in obese individuals. While drinking lemon water may not directly reduce excess fat, it can increase water intake, maintaining adequate hydration during weight loss.

According to Livestrong , consuming lemon water in moderation is beneficial for kidney health. However, when consumed excessively, lemon water can cause several health problems such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. This drink also has a diuretic effect, increasing fluid excretion from the body leading to frequent urination.

People with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) should monitor their lemon water intake to avoid worsening symptoms. Those with interstitial cystitis should consult a doctor before drinking lemon water, as it can irritate the bladder and cause symptoms such as lower abdominal pain and frequent urination.
