The Vietnamese delegation attended the 9th Session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from July 5 to 7. |
Of the 12 countries elected as replacement members for the 2022-2026 term, four are in the Asia- Pacific region: Vietnam, Malaysia, India, and Bangladesh. This group is the most competitive.
The Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 Convention, comprising 24 members, is UNESCO's key executive body for the protection of intangible cultural heritage. It is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the convention, proposing measures to protect intangible heritage, providing international support, and reviewing submissions for inscription… for adoption by the General Assembly of the Convention.
Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to UNESCO, emphasized: "This is the second time we have assumed this role at the key cultural governing body of UNESCO. This is of great significance in many respects, demonstrating the country's increasingly high standing and prestige on the international stage, and reflecting the international community's trust in our ability to contribute and our capacity to govern in global multilateral institutions."
This election is a recognition of Vietnam's contributions to its relationship with UNESCO, and to the preservation, conservation, and promotion of intangible cultural heritage both domestically and internationally . This is the result of Vietnam's multilateral, diversified, and comprehensively integrated international foreign policy, as well as the result of the systematic and coordinated implementation of Vietnam's candidacy plan over the past years.
As a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the 2022-2026 term, Vietnam will be in a favorable position to contribute even more to the completion and implementation of the goals and priorities of the 2003 Convention, elevating the importance of intangible cultural heritage, as it is not only an essential resource for cultural diversity, creativity, dialogue between cultures and social cohesion, but also a driving force for sustainable development.
With Vietnam currently being a member of the Executive Board for the 2021-2025 term, a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for the 2021-2025 term, and becoming a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 Convention, this is also an opportunity for Vietnam to continue contributing more proactively and positively to UNESCO's major programs and orientations in general and in the field of culture in particular.
This event affirms Vietnam's role and prestige at UNESCO in particular and on the international stage in general, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party, Resolution 22 of the Politburo on international integration, and Directive 25 of the Secretariat on promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy until 2030.
