After the August Revolution of 1945, patriotic Vietnamese people, answering the call of their homeland, went to the Đồng Tháp Mười swamps, determined to fight the French to the end. From late 1945 to late 1949, the Dương Văn Dương canal area served as the headquarters of various levels of leadership: the Regional Party Committee, the Southern Administrative Resistance Committee, the Southern Command, the Command of Zone 8, and various departments under the Administrative Resistance Committee. It was also the base of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial Administrative Resistance Committee, and the Provincial Military Command of several provinces in the Đồng Tháp Mười region. It could be said that "the whole of Southern Vietnam was in Đồng Tháp Mười." The Đồng Tháp Mười base was where revolutionary forces were built, developed, and distributed to the zones and provinces… From mid-1946, the Đồng Tháp Mười war zone gradually became a nerve center, a center of resistance in Southern Vietnam, with the Dương Văn Dương canal area becoming the backbone of the war zone.
