During the resistance war against the French, D1 Hill in Dien Bien Phu was a crucial eastern defensive stronghold for the French colonialists. Today, it has been chosen as the location for the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument and has become a cultural landmark and famous tourist destination in Dien Bien province, attracting many domestic and international visitors, especially during major national holidays.

Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument is located on D1 Hill in the center of Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province. The monument complex consists of three soldiers standing back-to-back, supporting a Thai child, with the "Determined to Fight, Determined to Win" flag at the top. The statue is 16.6 meters tall, made of bronze with a reinforced concrete core, and weighs 220 tons. The pedestal is 3.6 meters high, also made of reinforced concrete, and covered with decorative stone, consisting of three rectangular tiers stacked diagonally. It was designed by sculptor Nguyen Hai, a recipient of the Ho Chi Minh Prize, based on his Dien Bien Phu statue from the 1960s (1960-1965).

The Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument was designed and constructed based on consultations with General Vo Nguyen Giap and several surveys. Subsequently, the proposal from the Institute of Urban and Rural Planning (Ministry of Construction) selected Hill D1 as the site. This location is situated in the center of the historical site, approximately 50 meters above the Muong Thanh plain – an extremely beautiful and auspicious location with clear views of the entire city.
