Nepal organizes various activities to commemorate International Everest Day.
The event took place in the capital Kathmandu and was attended by many mountaineers, guides, and local people. Nepal's Minister of Tourism performed the traditional oil lamp lighting ceremony to honor the spirit of conquest and courage of the mountaineers.
At the ceremony, Nepalese authorities also honored Kami Rita Sherpa, a Nepalese guide who recently set a world record with 32 Everest ascents.

Lakpa Sherpas were commended after their impressive journey to conquer Mount Everest.
Lakpa Sherpa also received praise after completing her 11th climb earlier this month, further breaking her own record for the most Everest ascents by a female climber.
On May 29, 1953, New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay became the first people to set foot on the summit of Everest.

Mount Everest continues to be a symbol of conquest for mountaineers worldwide.
Since then, thousands of people from all over the world have tried their hand at conquering the highest mountain on the planet.
Located in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet (China), Mount Everest rises 8,849 meters above sea level.
