Many different age groups
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Deputy Head of Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, said that after the center was transferred from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to the Provincial Police, the unit has always focused on all aspects of the rehabilitation process, especially literacy education for the trainees. The center has contacted and established a cooperation agreement with the Department of Education and Training; proactively contacted schools that meet the teaching requirements and are convenient for teaching at the center to open literacy classes for the trainees. Currently, the literacy class has 14 students, including 2 female students and 5 students from ethnic minority groups. The person directly teaching literacy here is Mr. Le Huy Hoa, a teacher at Son Trung Primary School. Teacher Hoa shared that the class includes students of all ages, from those born in 1979 to the youngest, born in 2010. Due to the effects of drugs, the students' memories have significantly deteriorated, making it difficult for them to learn. During the week, on days off from teaching at school, Teacher Hoa comes to teach the literacy class here. In addition, to keep up with the curriculum, he sometimes takes advantage of Saturdays and Sundays to teach. His perseverance, along with the support and assistance from the staff at the rehabilitation center, has paid off. After nearly a month, the students have made significant progress, both in handwriting and in their learning attitude.
The joy of having my name read aloud.
And the greatest happiness of this special class is the joy of rediscovering literacy for those who were once lost. Student Thai Thi Muoi (born in 1984) emotionally recounted that as a child, she was too preoccupied with playing to learn to read and write. Now, after just one month at the center, she can read her own name and feels incredibly happy. Sharing this small joy, student Nguyen Thanh Vu (born in 1990) choked up as he expressed his gratitude to the teachers and staff at the center, saying that at the age of 36, he can now read, write, and do basic arithmetic. He shared that he will strive to learn so he can read books and newspapers to understand the harmful effects of drugs on health and the community, as well as learn how to protect himself from drugs and other social evils.
According to the curriculum of this special class, students will be equipped with basic knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic skills in accordance with the standard curriculum of the Ministry of Education and Training . The class is held five times a week and lasts continuously for six months. It can be said that the literacy class at Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1 is not simply a place to teach reading and writing, but more importantly, it ignites faith, love of life, and the effort to rediscover oneself in the students. The first letters they write here are the humane tools that help them confidently overcome their mistakes, firmly reintegrate into society, and become useful members of their families and communities.
