Choice or trade-off

In the journey of growing up, the effort to assert oneself becomes a pressure for a part of young people. To complete the set goals, many young people fall into the cycle of "selling their strength - selling their time" to get the income they dream of, get promoted at work... But life is full of surprises.

Take a break from work to catch up on sleep.

The story of a young person born in 1999 who quit her job to catch up on sleep, despite her current salary of 3,000 USD/month (nearly 80 million VND). Accordingly, the girl named Tuyet Han (living in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) works as a user experience designer. Tuyet Han said: “I stay at home and work remotely, but in opposite time zones, for a long time I have to work 10-12 hours a day and only sleep about 4 hours a night. I started to feel my health decline and realized I needed to take a break. During the first month of quitting my job, I almost only spent time sleeping.”

Making the decision to quit her job is not easy for this young person, because this is the dream income that many young people working in domestic companies are still striving for. Her family advised Tuyet Han to consider, but she herself clearly understands what she needs right now: “Right now, I need to take care of my health the most, I don’t want to go to work and then go to the hospital when I turn 30. When I temporarily quit my job, I also had a little regret, but what I need now is to be healthy enough to be interested, alert enough to study another major and start an interesting work journey, not to sell my strength in exchange for income.”

Tuyet Han's story has become a topic of interest to many young people on social networking forums, and it is also the concern of many young people of Gen Z when they put invisible pressure on themselves, in the hustle and bustle of work and study. A part of young people almost put pressure on themselves, setting the goal of achieving a high position or attractive income in the shortest time.

To get the position of branch manager at the age of 27, Nguyen Tan Tai (29 years old, organic chemistry engineer, living in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) almost only had work. Tan Tai said: “The company is less than 2km from home, but sometimes I don’t go home for nearly a month, just stay to do more testing to propose new projects. Until now, my nose almost can’t smell because of a long time working in the laboratory, exposed to many chemicals. I am also being treated for spinal spurs. 2 years in the management position is also the same amount of time to realize that salary compensates for medicine costs.”

Just enough choice

It took nearly 3 years to develop the habit of balancing work and life, Nguyen Phan Phuc Huan (30 years old, programming engineer, living in Tan Binh district, Ho Chi Minh City) shared: "The more contracts, the higher the income, so I and many colleagues accept to work day and night. But after nearly 3 years of trying so hard, I feel my health has declined significantly.

Even at mealtime, I couldn't eat all my favorite dishes. I re-planned, trained myself to work and take a day off from work to recharge my energy. My current income is lower than before, but it's enough to cover my living needs and I also have time to go to the gym and jog in the park."

Staying away from social media, without the pressure of goals such as: having a house by the age of 30, buying a car before 30, or traveling abroad for vacation..., Hai Yen (27 years old, living in District 4, Ho Chi Minh City) chose the job of a content designer at an advertising company after more than 2 years of freelancing, and building a lifestyle of "knowing enough is happiness".

Hai Yen said: “I gave up my job with projects and contracts, which paid well but had a lot of pressure. I chose a new job, just a salaried job but with time to relax, rest, and recreate my life. I also stopped following social media, where there are many images of luxury and success, which contributed to creating invisible pressure on my shoulders to keep up with my friends, forgetting one question: Today, have you had a happy day and lived a full life, or are you just chasing after goals to make money and get promoted?”

The journey of growing up in the career stage is a period of time when people are no longer sitting in school chairs, or being reminded by their parents to study every day. This journey is designed by each person to have appropriate values. Choosing the motivation to make an effort or pressure depends on whether you have listened to yourself or not. The line between choice and trade-off is very fragile.
