On September 19, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province issued an official dispatch requesting the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities in the province to help farmers harvest the summer-autumn rice crop "as soon as possible".
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Lieu province, due to the impact of storm No. 3 and the post-storm circulation causing heavy rain in recent days, rice has fallen down, making harvesting difficult and rice purchasing slow.
Forecasts from the Bac Lieu Province Hydrometeorological Station show that heavy rain will continue and water from the Hau River will flow in large quantities in the coming days, so rice harvesting will face even more difficulties.
Therefore, the department recommends that localities urgently mobilize combine harvesters to support farmers in harvesting summer-autumn rice as soon as possible, not letting farmers wait for traders to buy before harvesting. Regarding rice drying, if any locality has a need, please contact the Bac Lieu Agricultural Seed Center which has two drying ovens to organize rice drying for farmers.
On the same day, facing the above situation, Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Pham Van Thieu directly went to the fields to inspect the summer-autumn rice harvest in a number of districts in the province.
According to statistics from the Bac Lieu agricultural sector, up to this point, more than 12,600 hectares of summer-autumn rice crop have fallen, the damaged area under 30% is more than 2,200 hectares, the damaged area from 30 - 70% is nearly 7,800 hectares, the damaged area from 70% or more is 2,650 hectares and there are 216 hectares of rice area that are completely lost and cannot be harvested.
Mr. Thieu encouraged farmers whose rice fields were damaged, and at the same time requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop a flexible water regulation schedule and promptly open drainage sluices to prevent flooding to protect production; continue to closely monitor the weather situation, warn of heavy rain so that people can proactively respond to reduce damage.
